Alice and Dan make new friends fast

After losing all their buddies in part 4, they made a whole new group of lifelong friends within the span of a few months!

Doesn't makes sense huh? Especially when in 4 they are all like childhood friends. And not even a reference about them or the brother in 5. I blame the writers...

reply

Alice's dad referenced the brother when he said he kind of hopes she has a boy, because it would be nice to have one running around the house again.

I figured that it was Alice's group of friends in ANOES 4 and Dan's friends in part 5, who became friends with Alice when she started seeing Dan.

Yeah.

I felt that in part 4 Alice's only actual friends were Debbie & Sheila, that we were introduced to anyways.

Kincaid and Joey were Kristen's friends, Kristen was her brother's girlfriend and Dan was her brother's bud.

So it can be reasoned that Alice probably had more than two friends during her high school years.

I just bought a box set of the films, was disappointed to discover that it includes only the cut edition of Dream child, sad aha.

But yeah, just my thoughts on this topic!

There are many theories on this...1 is, maybe Mark, Greta and Yvonne were around in part 4, and they were all still good friends but they were just off-screen. Its funny in the scene where Shiela is killed in part 4 and they all are outside, there is a girl who looks kinda like Yvonne, and in the Diner there is a girl sitting in the back ground that looks like Greta a little, when Kristen rushes in to tell about Kincaid and Joey being killed, sometimes I like to pretend it's them lol

Another theory is maybe the ppl in part 5 were Dan's friends originally, maybe they were the ppl Dan is talking to at the beginning of part 4 when Alice first sees him.

Kinda the same thing happens in part 3 and part 4. I wondered if Kristen was still dating Rick in part 3 and was she still friends with Alice and they wee just off-screen?

reply

I assumed those were Dan's friends. All of Alice's are killed off in NOES 4 but Dan's group of friends survived. Dan's friends, all being as kind-hearted as Dan himself, accepted Alice into their group with open arms. She particularly seemed to bond with Yvonne.

When do you think Dan actually moved to Springwood? He said something to himself out loud in part 4 The Dream Master, of of all the places to move to , we moved to the Bermuda triangle, or something like that.

I agree that those were Dan's friends in Part Five and they became Alice's friends, plus she came out of her shell making it a lot easier to befriended her.

I'd assume Dan moved before his Junior school year (when NOES4 takes place). So, maybe a few months prior? He seemed to already have established a great deal of popularity and respect so we can assume he's been in Springwood for enough time to do that.

I also think the NOES5 group fits closer to Dan's overall personality than what Alice once was in NOES4. Greta is both rich and a model. Thus, she's very likely as popular as Dan. Yvonne herself seemed to already be establishing herself in a career as well as being on the swim team. So she's not just a star student but a respected athlete. I could see Yvonne being on her school's SGA and/or prom comity, being both intelligent and confident (something Alice eventually becomes herself). Mark's a bit of a wild card here. I could see him being already close to Greta and growing close to Alice, once she joins the group. Or perhaps he was one of the people Dan has stood up for (remember, Dan watches out for the bullied outcasts of his school, as we saw with Rick Johnson.)

The friends we see in NOES5 seem for more confident than how Alice acted in NOES4. While Alice seemed to hang with fellow outcasts (a nerd, an alternative tough girl, a rich girl who recently got out of an asylum, her martial arts obsessed brother) in NOES4, the friends she has in NOES5 all seem pretty established in their school. Though Mark is an anomaly, the NOES5 group are all as popular as Dan. To me, this means the meek Alice we first meet would never have the courage to interact with these people. But, in NOES5, Alice is as confident as her boyfriend Dan, so she now fits right in with his group.

tl;dr: They're all Dan's friend's cause they're popular and Alice used to be too afraid to speak, let alone make friends with a model.

This is an interesting topic... For some reason I want to think Kristen and Greta MAY have had a friendship at some point, mainly b/c their home lives and mothers are very similar, both rich snobs.

I want to say MAYBE all the part 5 ppl were around in part 4 just off screen...Alice ACTS as though she's been best friends with them since kindergarten. In the original script there is cut dialog where Alice says she, Greta and Yvonne have ALWAYS been together, or it's always been the 3 of them.

I could see that. Personally, if given more backstory, I could easily see Kristen and Greta's mothers being friends and the two girls simply attending the same dinner parties. We see in the original script of NOES3 that Kristen's always been a reasonably unpopular outcast among her peers. The fact that her recent "suicide attempt" is common knowledge AND her association with two other suicidal but more "spooky" teens of the same ward likely didn't help her standings in Springwood High.

I think it would be interesting to learn that Kristen, Greta, and Yvonne were once friends in their childhood but grew apart from Kristen as she grew weirder (either due her harsh upbringing or the start of her nightmares). Kristen eventually veered off to be friends with people like Sheila and Debbie who didn't judge her for her weirdness. Through them, she meets Rick and inevitably his twin sister Alice.

Meanwhile, Alice is friends with Kristen's OLD friends but the two groups don't mix well (possibly bad blood from Greta and/or Yvonne calling Kristen out on her "off" attitude lately). Thus, the events of NOES4 were really us witnessing RICK'S friends dying as opposed to his twin's. Alice was simply close to them because her brother was.

I personally prefer the idea that both groups were Alice's friends but at different stages of her life. NOES4 is Alice's main group she's had for some time. They're all unpopular in some way but don't really care. Even each member fits an 80s/90s high school stereotype. Sheila is the Steve Erkel-like nerd, Debbie is the tough girl everyone's afraid of, Kristen is the pretty girl who everyone stays away from because she has "serious issues," Rick is the extreme bro who's a bit too obsessed with an alternative sport, and finally Alice is the wallflower who could be the most beautiful girl in school is she just believed in herself more. They'd fit right into an 80s teen flick!!...y'know, if not for the homicidal maniac trying to kill them.

Meanwhile, Dan has his stereotypical, Saved By the Bell popular cliche. He's the awesome preppy jock with a heart of gold and also somehow the valedictorian (like seriously, how did THAT happen), Greta is the bombshell beauty who can be blunt but isn't outright mean, Yvonne is the athletic genius over-achiever who also happens to be just as pretty as the bomb shell, and Mark is..."Screech." Y'know the "Why is he hanging with us?...oh, because we're awesome people who need to prove we're not self-absorbed and can hang with anyone. Also, he's likely the childhood bestie of the awesome jock and is crushing on a member of our group extremely hard." Meanwhile, NOES5 Alice becomes the final and rarest 80s/90s high school stereotype only seen in movies: The girl people once never noticed but can now see is a total package just because she kinda changed her clothes/hair and is now more outspoken. They'd all easily fit into any given sitcom...y'know, except for the unplanned pregnancy and possibly demonic possession of said unplanned pregnancy.

Those are great observations.

To me, it's almost as if in part 5, the characters are equivalent to the ones in part 4.

Yvonne is Debbie's replacement as the tough girl.

Greta is Kristen's replacement, as the rich, yet nice girl... To me Greta IS Kristen just with dark hair and minus the Freddy trauma..even notice how their deaths are similar.. both at the diner table being pressured to eat by their uncaring mother, while both girls would rather mourn their recently killed friends than to eat.

Also I think Greta sorta filled Kristen's role as BFF to Alice.

I think Mark was Rick's replacement, Mark basically became like a brother to Alice as the movie went on.

I also thought Yvonne was similar to Shiela in ways, both kinda coming off with sarcastic wise cracks.

I've wondered also if maybe Alice became friends with Kristen just via Rick dating her.

I always wanted to think That Racine ~Greta's mom" may have been Elaine's tennis pal Kristen talked about who possibly helped kill Freddy....it does seem like Freddy was rougher on Greta than the other 2 he killed....he just kept torturing her even after he killed her.

If Kristen was being tormented by nightmares I think Greta would have been consoling..moreso than Yvonne. Had Greta survived the diner party I THINK she would have been a total believer.

What I never understood was, NONE of the ppl in part 5 seemed to have had any knowledge at all of the events from the previous movie. When Shiela was killed the WHOLE SCHOOL was in an uproar, so you 'd think they'd have some knowledge. In the part 5 audio book that is briefly touched on, Alice says something like, "Mark, didn't Dan ever tell you what happened to my brother, Rick?!" And Mark replies, "Dan would never talk about that!"

Well it seems like most of the NOES movies have this formula. Like in part 3 Tyran~sp~ is the tough girl like Debbie and Yvonne. Then in part 6 Tracie is the tough girl.
