1) Why must there be a reason? He just loved her. He'd never had any contact with a girl, and she was pretty. He began to like her for no special reason, and if you've ever been a teenager (he was 17 at the time), you should know what it's like.

No, with Mary he was not a 'teenager'. You are confusing Mary with Rachel, his first crush when he was 17 or so. He was older. Must be, like, 25 or something..

I think you're focusing a little too hard on the fact that he was named Christy. "Christie" or "Christy" as a man's name is rare, but not unheard of, especially in Scotland and Ireland, where it can be a variation of the name "Christian" or a pet name derived from "Christopher".
So Phreschke is right. It isn't necessarily a girl's name.
