His sister

I was very suprised that when his sister annonced her pregnacy that her parents didn't cart her off to a Laundry. Remember it was the 30s/40s and a girl who did that would surely find herself in a Laundry in less than a minute. I wonder why they didn't send her to one? They were poor and probabl could have gotten a nice chucnk of change for letting the church take her in.

Maybe because she was getting married just, like in two or three days ? That's why?

No, they wouldn't send her there if she were getting married to the father. Why would they do that?

Maybe families had to make donations in order to drop their women at a Laundry. The Browns didn't exactly look like they had a lot of loot to spare.

Better and cheaper just to marry the sister off.
