Depressing?

I haven't seen this film yet (so no spoilers, please), but someone told me they found it depressing. Do you agree?

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I definitely wouldn't call it a depressing film. It certainly has its bleak moments, because of the setting and subject matter, but the whole story is about how Christy Brown was able to overcome huge obstacles in his life. And more importantly (in my opinion anyway) it's done without the usual Hollywood "inspirational success story" sentimentality, but with a great sense of humour (Like Brown playing soccer with his mates, acting as goalkeeper by stopping the ball with his head, classic).

Bottom line, in my opinion, it's a far from depressing film.

Thank you!

Of course it has sad moments, but overall it's very inspirational and the ending is uplifting. Please watch it!

You better tell me your thoughts later;) Daniel and Brenda more than deserved their Oscars, btw...

This movie is the opposite of depressing.

I've never seen a performance greater than Daniel Day-Lewis'.

Watched it last night; it was uplifting, not depressing, and Daniel Day-Lewis was phenomenal.

Glad to hear you finally watched it! Have you seen "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (2007) and "The Sea Inside" (2004)? They are other remarkable films with similar themes.

I haven't seen The Sea Inside, but I have seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and thought it was quite good (I'd like to give it a rewatch, too). I think that the film this is most comparable to is the wonderful Shine.

Now I haven't seen "Shine" yet, but it's definitely on my list! Love Geoffrey Rush and Lynn Redgrave.

Shine is very good indeed, Al.

Actually it is depressing, bleak and grim throughout.

Very difficult to watch.

I didn't find it depressing, but I was drained by the time it went off

'My Left Foot' is not precisely your typical inspirational movie but is far from being depressive. The film actually ends with a happy note, not even mentioning Christy Brown's premature decease but his wedding with Mary Carr.

definitively not a depressing movie but neither the best film to cheer you up. it's kinda bittersweet, just like life itself.

reply

It has its depressing moments but on the whole I found this a very uplifting and inspiring film, it shows how you can overcome adversity just by believing in the good stuff in life. Like art and love.
