The truth about Mary Carr--possible spoiler!

Sadly, the happily-ever-after of the movie may have been far from the truth...

That's why happily-ever-after is called a Hollywood ending in movies.

They very rarely reflect reality.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

so what she was a prostitute? people change don't they? what if she had a change in heart after she met him?

and of course they r gonna dig up her bad history and spread rumors about her, i mean how will they ever sell the book then if it didn't contain some "controversial" facts.

did the author even bothered to interview her? did he get her side of the scoop? i guess not since it will spread doubt then about his info...

I'm not defending her since she did marry the guy but can't be very fulfilling to be married to a guy who can barely speak, can't make love or do many activities. So it's not a shock that she was a wanton whore.

I was so happy to see that he married her in the film... and then I came here to read trivia and some threads and this totally bummed me out. I appreciate you sharing it, but that sucks.

It kind of makes me wish they had waited 10 or 20 more years to make the movie, so that they could have made a more faithful film about Brown at no risk of offending those who knew him. The movie warms my heart about the whole eventual marriage between Brown and Mary Carr, but reality, alas, was much harsher.

The movie ends with Christy entering a marriage full of hope. And the movie was based on CB's book which ended at that point, IIRC.

But that which seemed like a promising future, & which, in actuality did not turn out to be that way -- possibly? -- has happened to many other people entering a marriage, hasn't it?

For information about Christy's fascinating relation with a woman whom he did not describe in his book and for more about the Christy Brown-Mary Carr marriage, see:

And there may be a mistaken belief among some that Christy's Cerebral Palsey was so severe that he'd not have sexual desires or be capable of sexual arousal.

That's not the case (see link below) and it may very well be that a prostitute like Mary Carr would be more "inventive" than many women in finding ways to satisfy Christy's sexual desires.

Of course, in no way does that excuse her cruelty or abuse of him. But it may very well explain his sticking with her despite her mistreatment of him.
