The movie ends with Christy entering a marriage full of hope. And the movie was based on CB's book which ended at that point, IIRC.
But that which seemed like a promising future, & which, in actuality did not turn out to be that way -- possibly? -- has happened to many other people entering a marriage, hasn't it?

And there may be a mistaken belief among some that Christy's Cerebral Palsey was so severe that he'd not have sexual desires or be capable of sexual arousal.
That's not the case (see link below) and it may very well be that a prostitute like Mary Carr would be more "inventive" than many women in finding ways to satisfy Christy's sexual desires.
Of course, in no way does that excuse her cruelty or abuse of him. But it may very well explain his sticking with her despite her mistreatment of him.
