Stop refilling his whiskey glass for god's sake!

If a guy is causing a ruckus in a restaurant why on earth would the waiter keep on filling up his glass of whiskey? Was anybody else like "come on!"?

reply

No, his behavior should be tolerated.
I suppose you think your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ could make life quite pleasant for you if you were in Christy's place?
IT DOESN'T WORK FOR EVERY ONE.kILLJOY

I have Cerebral Palsy, I won't say I suffer from it because I don't. People like Christy and people whom have less ability than I or even he do.

I twitch and jump now and then, and it does make me and others like me feel self-conscious and embarrassed when people stare or tut and sigh.

I'm just thankful that there are people like you who understand and don't make us feel like we shouldn't be let out. Well said.

Lesg, did you even see the movie? Or did you come here to attack people with religious nonsense you pompous jerk? I made a comment about a scene in the movie where a person is drunk and abusive and a waiter continues to serve him alcohol.

reply

Yeah, I saw the movie but I wouldn't have been, in any way threatened by Christy Brown in those circumstances or any, for that matter, would you?
I believe in "Live & Let Live".
Unlike Christy Brown, you will never be a Great Person, your attitude just won't allow it.
You call me pompous but you are shallow, "Holier Than Thou" and "More Pious Than Thou Art"
Good luck in Heaven...or Hell.
You forget about "Love thy neighbor as thyself"
Jesus thinks you're the lower end of the alimentary canal.
Figure that out for yourself, if you can.

As two Irishman are walking home from the Pub after it closes, one falls in a ditch beside the road. A woman exclaims "My god! That man is drunk!" To which his friend replies "No he's not! I saw him move!"

At least they didn't let him drive home.

reply

This argument is ridiculous, I'm not a religious person, I actually thought you were the one who was "holier than thou" and "more pious than thou art", I simply thought that a guy in a movie I had just watched should not have been served alcohol while he was yelling at people in a restaurant, then you follow that thought by suggesting that I'm going to Hell. Now I can "never be a great person" because of the many character flaws you've assessed based on my opinion of a scene in the movie My Left Foot. I usually check out these message boards because it can be fun and informative, this is neither, have a good time loving your neighbor.

The whiskey glass gives the audience a tangible index of Christy's reaction to the news, and his drunkeness gives the teacher a sense of her responsibility in that now that he has been taught to express himself, he will express himself about his frustrated romantic feelings for her. It's a film, not a novel, and the audience needs to see evidence of the character's emotional status. This creates a dramatic confrontation as a film requires.
In the actual book, Christy's description of her is hagiographic.

It's Ireland, you aren't drunk until you're dead here.

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.

reply

If they had refused to give him the alcohol it would have been exploiting his disability because he would be unable to get it himself. I don't think anyone was pleased with his drinking, but manipulating the fact that he has cerebral palsy would have made it worse for everyone.

"It's Ireland, you aren't drunk until you're dead here"

AMEN!!!

I chuckled when I read this post, not because I didn't believe the comment had any merit (for example, the American waitress - IN THE US - who refuses to serve a pregnant woman wine). It's just ridiculous because the setting is IRELAND!!! And Ireland circa late 50s, early 60s no less.

This is IRELAND! If a man asks for a drink YOU GIVE HIM HIS BOOZE! It is this simple and really has little to do with something so complicated as exploiting his disability.

Reminds me of the time when I was in a pub in Ireland, nursing a pint and having a smoke when an American couple asked that I extinguish my cigarette (and not politely) because they were eating their pub food, in addition to something about how rude and insensitive of me that they would have to breathe my second-hand smoke. CHRIST!!! IT WAS A PUB!!! WHERE DID THEY THINK THEY WERE? CALIFORNIA? I simply stared at them and lit another...

the real question is which is the more difficult scene to watch in film: this, or when merrick gets attacked in his bedroom by the drunks in the elephant man?

reply

I agree with the original poster. If a guy is screaming drunk and threatening to kick someone's *ss in a restaurant, the waiter should not continue to serve him. That view has nothing to do with cerebral palsy.

"I am not trying to seduce you. Would you like me to seduce you?"

reply

I noticed it. While in the case of a normal person the waiter would have most probably reacted and refused to serve Christy any more drinks, the fact that Christy has cerebral palsy naturally alters how people perceive his actions and him. The problem is that we don't see the waiter hesitate or anything, because we can't see his face. However, it is plausible that the waiter didn't know what to do and so served Christy anyway.

reply

It's a symptom of being overly sympathetic. He was acting like a jack-ass but everyone was afraid to call him on it because of his disability. It's pretty common.

reply

The waiter had a job to do. Sell the food, sell the booze, please the customer, and keep doing it until management tells you not to.

He didn't liked to be called a child. But the selfish attitudes were just like a child's.

reply

Anyone notice the waiter fill a whole glass (3rd) with whiskey?? Thats way too much for hard liquor.
