What was up with the lawyer's apartment?

The elevator opens right into it. Does that mean anyone could waltz right in like Jake did?

it's a on the top floor. the lower floors the elevator probably opens up into a hallway and there are more than one apartment per floor. he probably has the entire floor to himself. you probably need a key or a code to get the elevator to even go to that floor. since he's having dinner guests maybe he unlocked the button to the top floor.

This. There are a lot of apartment buildings that work this way. These days, they use a HID card reader that enables the floor button. If you don't swipe the card first, the button does nothing. They usually have an override mode that effectively unlocks the front door. However, a building like that would lock the door at street level, so he would have had to tail someone into the building to get in.
