Confused. What exactly did the Indians win?

I don't think the movie made it clear? they just said "let's win this whole thing"

ezcept they didn't go to the world series and win that......that was more like a divion title?

so the ending of this film is celebrating a division title? surely not the penant.

what did the Indians even win?

They won the right to go to the playoffs. Something the Indians hadn't done in years. That was in and of itself a big victory.

@sleepy head

Your Ty Webb quote; I've seen Caddyshack numerous times and don't remember ever hearing that. When does he say it? Is it from an edited for tv version?

They won the AL East. Back then, there were only two divisions per league, and the Indians, Brewers and Tigers were in the East with Boston, New York, Toronto and Baltimore.

They also beat Rachel Phelps' plan to move them. Their winning streak, combined with certain sellouts during the ACLS, was sure to put them over league attendence requirements preventing her from breaking the lease with the city and movng the team.

They won their division for the first time since division play began in the 60's. It was the first time in decades that Cleveland was proud of the Indians, and Cleveland hasn't won any titles since the Browns won the NFL title, pre-Super Bowl. They did something no one had expected or thought possible, including beating the Yankees. And lastly, they blocked their owners plans to move the team and dump them, and gave her the biggest F U. Even if she did try to dump them, someone else would pick most of them up now, having seen their value.

as mentioned they win the tie breaking game to win the division. The sequel indicates that they got swept by the white sox in the playoffs.

They just had to win the division in order to stay in Cleveland.

reply

Actually they didn't. Rachel moving the team was contingent on the attendance being below a certain number for the season. By the time they play that last game they blew right past that number.

Before the wild-cards were added to MLB, it was a more impressive achievement to even make the postseason, since you had to win your division.

The S.F. Giants won 103 games in 1993, 2nd best in either league, but didn't make the postseason since the Atlanta Braves won 104 games.

And in 1981 The Reds won more games that anyone else in MLB..... and did not make the playoffs

Actually, all they had to do is top 800,000 in attendance to stay in Cleveland. What Phelps needed to happen is for attendance to dip below 800K because that would allow her to break the lease between the city and the Indians regarding the stadium.

The trouble here is that the strike broke the season up into 2 separate seasons. No 1st half team won the 2nd half with the Dodgers and Phillies finishing as also rans the 2nd half. This is also the only time the Montreal Expos went to the playoffs. Speaking of playoffs and the Reds, did you know that the Reds, along with the Pirates, were the only 2 National League teams not to make the playoffs in the 80's? Ironic thing is, they both made the playoffs, and played each other, in 1979 and 1990 each winning the World Series in those years.
