Why isn't Disney doing a live action Little Mermaid remake?

I know another company is doing a live action Little Mermaid adaptation but how come Disney isn't doing a live action remake?

reply

I've got many things to respond to here BUT THIS one deserves it no matter what

The Disney Studio essentially has a Love/ HATE relationship with this film (emphisis on the word HATE) and does not seem to care much about it

Also a live action adaptaion would be very tricky and expensive to do BUT if there was more love then HATE with this film...........what do you think would happen?

IF the former Sofia Copola film does what English Patient or Titanic does box office wise

what do you think would happen????????????

reply

Sorry, the mobile app is confusing. Why would Disney hate this film?

reply

In all fairness, even if they didn't have a love/hate relationship with the film, with a bit more emphasis on hatred despite the fact that TLM seems to sell VERY well, it would have been extremely difficult to pull off since A. more than half of the characters are aquatic animals, and B., most of it takes place under the sea. They would need someone like Michael Bay to do it, since 1. He's no stranger to live action films with primarily CGI elements (he was responsible for the live action Transformers and TMNT movie franchises, after all), and 2. seeing how The Little Mermaid is, for all intents and purposes, an action thriller film in addition to romance, like Die Hard or James Bond, for example, this would be well within his territory.

Why do you say that?

reply

Because it happens to be true Though well received in 1989 the film got all but ignored in the ninties by almost everyone involved in it's creationl
Yes a TV series was on in the 1992 BUT Disney made no acknowledgement of this.CBS and Burger King did) Others have mde projects involving generic mermaids in general BUT Disney does not care

If someone makes something that takes place in a snowy enviornment............ No appearances in Easter and Christmas parades after 1991 (except once because Hostess Joan Lunden's daughter was in the float dedicated to Little Mermaid
No theme park attraction till 1992 ve other films)
No ice show for almost ten years How long did it take to get to Broadway?

and that is a small amount hence The HATE.

The love comes from when the film DOES make money but at the same time they deny the films accomplishments which is QUITE often

Whereaa as other films regardless of box office etc GET more respect

in short Disney treats the film like Lady Tremaine treats Cinderella

reply

In all fairness, Toys R Us back in 2008 had a massive blowout of a The Little Mermaid sale that covered quite a bit of the store, and there's little indication that it was even related to the Disney Princess franchise, so I wouldn't say it got that much hate from Disney. That being said, however, yeah, it really doesn't get much love from Disney either.

Well it’s been a few years since this thread came out. I think it’s simply due to the fact that it’s not easy to make an underwater film as a live action movie and how would you handle all of the talking underwater animals. But with the recent release of the Aquaman movie we finally have a template on how to create an underwater film and I think we may see an announcement for Little Mermaid sometime soon

reply

Why would Disney hate this film?

reply

Not sure you have to ask them, but pretty sure they haven't thought about doing one yet

reply

In all fairness, they'd probably need to make it mostly CGI in an otherwise live action film, sort of like the Transformers films or the TMNT films being made right now, since more than half of the characters are aquatic creatures, and if they DO have to make the film, they'd probably need to have Michael Bay direct it, since he did do pretty well for those aforementioned films, and besides, The Little Mermaid was in part an action film (heck, its ending was practically lifted from Die Hard, probably one of the biggest action flicks).

reply

I wonder that too. I'd love to see it happen.

They were making one, but all the actors drowned.

back to the drawing board...

😝

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

reply

I don't know about all the actors drowning

reply

because it's 'under the sea'! 😛

reply

I think it would be difficult to do a live action version of it. The lead character is a mermaid, it takes part mostly under water and the cast is mostly animals. I suppose you could do a "Babe" out of it and do voice actors imposed over CGI animals. But how would you do the sea?

reply

Sometimes that classics are better left alone

reply

After seeing new Jungle Book today maybe just maybe

BUT Disney's love HATE relationship with the film.........................................................thats a big an obstecale as making it look convincing

reply

They still might make one in the future it is hard to say

reply

And if the other two versions do well.................................

just do not know

reply

LOL

reply

Probably because all of the underwater scenes, That'd be very hard to film since the characters will be talking and stuff. They won't just be a few scenes with them underwater, but 5-30 minutes underwater scenes and stuff, so they'd probably have to CGI the whole thing, and it'd be REALLY expensive and stuff.

reply

Yes, easier said than done. Look at the hassles they had with making Jaws and Waterworld..

If they do - what new elements can they add to the film?
maybe - WHY reason Ursula was exiled, flashbacks of Ariel's mother (they could copy some parts of TLM3 - Ariel's beginning for this). other stuff?

Best they do Beauty and the Beast first (Linda Woolverton screenplay)and save TLM for later.

Would love to see a "Saving Mr Banks " type film about the making of TLM featuring Jodi and Howard info...

Yeah, agreed. At best, they can only go for stuff like the Michael Bay Transformers films or even the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy to pull it off (in other words, have be live action with more than a few CGI elements).

Don't know about Ariel's Beginning (personally, I thought that film stank more than rotted fish if you ask me, and if they do have to use it, they really should make sure that Athena actually dies differently while still having humans involved. Namely, not have her being run over by a ship just to retrieve a music box [this is a creature that was able to withstand significant amounts of oceanic pressure. Do you really think that someone like her would be killed just from being run over by a ship? Goku, a Saiyan with similar traits as well as endurance due to living under gravitational pulls of Planet Vegeta for a few minutes, managed to survive being crushed by a collapsible ceiling.].), but I do think explaining the circumstances behind Ursula's exile would work, even if it's stuff we already guessed like Ursula trying to take over Atlantica beforehand.

Best they do Beauty and the Beast first (Linda Woolverton screenplay)and save TLM for later.

Linda Woolverton isn't involved in the live action remake, actually. It's Stephen Chbosky who will be doing the screenplay, and Evan Spiliotopoulos for the story. That said, I'd definitely look forward to that film and see if it has any improvements to the original (Chbosky did very well with the Cinderella movie, so I'm pretty confident that he'll probably improve it with the remake). And personally, I would prefer it if Linda Woolverton stays the heck away from the remake, especially after the disaster that was the Maleficent movie.

Would love to see a "Saving Mr Banks " type film about the making of TLM featuring Jodi and Howard info...

Yeah, that will be interesting.

reply

thanks for your reply. Yeah the death of Athena was kinda dumb. A better plotted death relating to Triton's hate of Humans would be better..

reply

Yeah, especially when as it is, humans just seemed more like an afterthought (for goodness sakes, he didn't even do a surface ban in that film if Marina Del Ray surfacing just minutes after she got promoted is to be believed, and that was despite it playing a large role in the conflict of the film), and if anything, Triton's hatred was directed towards music. MUSIC! It's almost as though the guys who wrote that stupid movie didn't even LOOK at the original film. At least Return to the Sea actually DID try to stay true to the story of the original film, even if it WAS a copy/paste (though that being said, it was a better done film than The Force Awakens despite that).

reply

In a stage adaptation (NON Broadway) Ursula killed Ariel's Mother

Basically half the staff at Disney (Thank you Katzenberg)see Ariel as a
stereotyped teen Since her father puts restrictions on anything she become curious

Ex If Triton Forbade contact w Blue Striped Yellow fish That's why she would be friends with Flounder

Hence the love /HATE relationship Disney has with film

reply

Didn't they say they are going to be making one now? (I know this wouldn't have applied when this question was first asked)

reply

Well...woulda been nice doing that when Alyssa Milano and Kurt McKinney(for whom Ariel and Prince Eric were modeled after) still looked like their cartoon counterparts years ago.

reply

I read about Chloe Grace Moretz being cast as Ariel

Regardless, I can say with certainty that technical challenges would NEVER be an actual impediment

If they want a live action remake, they’ll make one. They won’t be stopped by underwater effects or CGI - those are the LAST concern of actual filmmakers these days

reply

I don't think Alyssa Milano was the model, I know Disney said that but if you see the making of, Ariel looks just like who the live action model was.

reply

but Ariel looks just like Sherri Stoner. I see none of Alyssa Milano.
