The easy way

Joe Clark took the easy route to improving his school, by expelling hundreds of kids who won't be able to get an education and will end up in an even worse situation a far as their future goes, by alienating teachers and parents, and by flagrantly breaking important health and safety rules. It's much much harder to use the carrot instead of the stick and try and reach out to these kids in a civilised and non-dictatorial way. I've been there, so I do know what I'm talking about, but hey, I'm only a white guy, what do I know, right?

I fear for these kids and what they become if they prefer Clark's cold, hard, ruthless approach to the more liberal approach. The irony is that many of these black kids would no doubt consider themselves to be Democrats without realising that Clark's hard-line approach is a complete anathema to everything Obama and the Democratic Party is meant to stand for.

Joe Clark had one year to get the kids to pass the basic skills test. The school would not have succeeded if they had to deal with the kids that only showed up to do nothing but fill up space. He did the right thing kicking all of those bums out.
