So what exactly compelled him to do the horrid things he did to young boys?
Was he mentally ill with no concept of right or wrong, was he a psychopath, or was he a sociopath who knew exactly what he was doing?

well, according to the book, Parnell had some kind of self-harming mental state...there is a medical term for this but i can not remember what was it.
Parnell tried to blind his eye, pick out a tooth by himself since he was very young.
I do think he was some kind of psychopath...he abused boys since in his teenhood...
Well the thing is, although Parnell himself denied, the book "I know my first name is steven stayner' says that Parnell himself was sexually abused as a boy.....when he was 13.
His co-workers at the Palace Hotel in Ukiah had no inkling he had anything wrong going on emotionally or mentally.
