i can see y he was very very over protective of his own kids
shareGiven his own experience, that is certainly understandable. He also spent the last years of his all too brief life spreading awareness and sharing his story to help others. God rest his soul, at least he's out of pain. He died way too young, and it's sad for his family, and that his children have grown up without him. And now with his brother's crimes, and Parnell's light sentence, and now his recent arrest, makes this story all the more tragic. Steven deserved a longer and happier life. RIP Steven.

What's even more tragic than Steven's death is the fact that his brother, Cary, who felt stuck in his brother's shadow, became a serial killer himself. Court TV's website has some good essays on both Kenneth Parnell and Cary Stayner...

this is one of my favorite movies all time. it's sad about this world these days, that the kids can't walk in the streets alone anymore. i watch this movie everytime it's on. i wonder if they have any pictures of steven stayner in his 20's.
shareI don't know if the site still exists, but my brother had a picture Steven Stayner piggybacking Timmy White on his screensaver. It was press photo of their triumphant return and it kind of brightens your day just to see it. Steven had a BIG smile unlike in the movie(although I can understand why).
shareThere is a book, "The Yosemite Murders" by Dennis McDougal that has the last photo ever taken of Steven, he was posing in front of the intersection where he was abuducted. It was taken shortly before he died. The book is still in print and should be available through your local bookstore.

how old were his kids?
he dies in 89 and the movie came out in 89... i wonder if he ever saw it...
I THINK I THINK 2 MUCH
WE ALL WANT SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL
---------I WISH I WAS BEAUTIFUL
Not sure how old the children are sorry..
What a life this young lad had.. Firstly being kidnapped then having a fatal accident.. May he rest in peace..
I believe his daughter Ashley was about four at the time and his son Steven Jr., about two years old.

I remember when the movie first aired back in '89. It aired several months before Steven died, so it's very likely that he saw it.
I remember hearing the report of his death on the radio a few months after seeing the movie, and feeling so sad. Just when he seemed to be on his way to living the kind of life he deserved--raising a loving family of his own--he died. Talk about unfair.
It is very unfair, especially when you think about that evil, vile monster that is Parnell is still alive and healthy trying to perv on kids.

Me too. Why this poor innocent boy? I HATE thinking about what happened to him but I cant help but think about the poor boy before he left the house on that fateful day he was taken, when he had no idea of what was going to happen to change his live forever. I HATE that vile beast parnell i hope he is tortured for eternity in hell.

I'm pretty sure he watched it, too. Maybe the family had some sort of approval on the final product. I seem to remember an article about the movie in TV Guide the week it aired and there was a picture of the whole family. Steven looked so happy as a grown man & I thought to myself how nice it was that he was able to finally find some peace in his life after suffering through so much as a child. When I heard he died in a motorcycle accident a few months later, I felt terrible! Years later when it was discovered that his brother Cary was a serial killer, I immediately thought about how Steven's tragic ordeal must have affected Cary, too. God bless the rest of the Stayner family for all the pain they've suffered...
sharewhere can i get the picture online? i got the pic in a book and you're right. It really makes your day to see his smile/ Its so sincere.

His brother became a serial killer? Holy sh_t, that's awful. That poor family.
shareI thought there was a coda telling about his death at the end of the movie? I have only seen it once. When it happens in your own neighborhood (Ukiah) you don't really need to see the movie.
shareYes, there was something added for subsequent showings saying that Steven had died. The original airing didn't have that of course, since he was alive then.
I remember the original airing, the last thing you saw on screen was "Kenneth Parnell is a free man." I think that got edited too after he got incarcerated again, but it's been a long time since I've seen it. I wonder if they now a new update that he died?

The movie on youtube includes an end message that Parnell was incarcerated for trying to buy a boy and that he died in prison.
shareThanks for that info. I have to tell you, what a sick feeling it gave me, and I'm sure everyone who watched this show when it was originally broadcast, with the ending "Kenneth Parnell is a free man."

I just remember the sick feeling I had when the message came on screen that Steven had died. I had no idea about the accident until those words came on screen (this was probably a year or so after the fact). But yeah, the part about Parnell being a free man would just an extra kick in the stomach.
shareI had no idea when seeing the movie for the first time that Steven had died in a motorcycle crash. The words flashed across the screen like an electric shock and I cried for several hours afterworlds because I never expected that. It still haunts me when I think about it.
Oh yea, and Pernell being free at the time I saw it. (Thankfully, I understand he is dead now and won't be able to kidnap and hurt any more kids.)
