One of the most heartbreaking scenes

...is the scene right after Steven gets his car and he pulls up outside his house. He peers inside and sees his family enjoying themselves, his sisters doing homework, etc...the look on his face was one of sadness and despair when he realizes that he no longer knows these people, almost like they are strangers to him and he is an outsider looking into a normal family dynamic that he never knew. Unfortunately, Steven was damaged beyond repair at this point.

Also that talk he had with his mother at the end of the movie had me in tears. He is trying to explain to her, that his childhood was tragically severed and the little boy that she once knew and loved...is gone forever.

I agree that it is sad. It's a true fact that children who are abused basically that part of who they are die. That child is gone for ever. It's the same for any victim of rape. It's hard for people who haven't been through it to understand. I think especially during that time in the 80s the true psychological trauma that children went through when abused just wasn't understood. The parents actually thought life could continue on as it was before. Steven was back, but he really wasn't.

It's a heart breaking what this family went through then to add to what Steven's brother Cary did in Yosemite Park. My heart aches for them.

I always try to be positive though so it is wonderful that Steven married and gave his parents grandchildren. I'm sure they adore their grandkids and it is great that Steven can live on through them.
