I read that Rob Zombie originally didn't want anyone associated with the original film to be part of his remakes, but Danielle managed to get an audition anyways and Rob changed his mind.
Here is her quote about it from an interview:
IGN: So how did you come to be involved in the remake?
Harris: I was doing a convention and a fan came up to me and said "I heard rumors that you're going to be in the new Halloween", and I said "What new Halloween?" He said "They're redoing the original Halloween." I said "But my character's not even alive yet." He goes "No, you're going to be Laurie Strode," and I said "Really? Huh&#Array; Well, that's news to me! But that's a great rumor!" I guess rumors don't start from nowhere, so I think it kind of sparked their interest to have me back in the new one. I don't really know how it happened. I kept talking to fans and so many people knew about it. Even on imdb it was rumored that I was doing it. And at this point, I had never talked to one person about the movie. My agents, manager, no one had even contacted me at all about the fact that they were doing another Halloween.
I got back to LA and I called Malek Akkad who I hadn't talked to in forever, and I said "I know I haven't talked to you in years, but I just want you to know that there's no bad blood from Halloween 6. I know you're doing another one. People are talking about me doing it. I hear maybe Rob Zombie's going to be doing it. I just want you to know from my mouth that I would love to be a part of this movie. It could be a cameo or whatever. I just think it would be really cool to be part of him re-envisioning the original." He said "That's cool. I didn't even know that you'd want to be part of it." I said "Of course I would! Halloween 6 was a specific situation, but if things are done different this time, than yeah, I would love to." We just kept talking back and forth, back and forth. When Rob was attached, Rob basically said "Absolutely not. I do not want Danielle in the movie." He said "I just don't want anybody from the other sequels. I really want to start over again." I think everyone and their mother was calling him from the other movies trying to get in on this. I never called him; I didn't even know him.
I pretty much just talked to Dimension in L.A. and New York and my manger was very crafty and managed to get me in to audition for it, for Annie. I didn't think I was really right for Laurie, but I thought "Maybe I can be Annie or Linda." Also, I'm 30 years old, so the sort of young, naive Jamie Lee Curtis character is not so much for me anymore. Monika Mikkelsen was casting, who's a friend of my manager, and she said "You know what? I'm just going to tell Rob I'm going to put her on tape and let's just see what she does." So I went in and signed in for it and sat in a room with other people auditioning for Halloween and thought "This is so weird that I'm auditioning for Halloween, but okay." And I went in and I read and did Annie just the way you saw me in the film. It was just being as much like me as possible, which is very different from Nancy Loomis [in the original]. I thought "Well, if it's meant to be, it'll happen." Rob called and said "You are my girl. You're Annie, there's no doubt about it. Even though I didn't want you, what you did in there was exactly what I was looking for, so you're my girl." Then it went back and forth a little while just to convince everybody that it wasn't going to be weird that I was playing another character, but it was good to go.
I talked to Rob and I said "I'm super stoked." He said "Annie's a great character. You're kind of in-between the good girl and the slut." I said "Fabulous! That hits home for me. Awesome! Get me a script!" I didn't even have a script. There wasn't a script available and I couldn't wait to see what I did. I got it three days later and was reading it and when I got to the part that says Annie lives I went "Oh my god, I live!" But Annie always lived. People are asking me now "Why did Rob decide to leave you alive. Was it because of who you are?" I tell them "Actually, Annie was always supposed to live, as far as I'm aware." I never talked to Rob about it, but that's the way the script always was.
