Miss Daisy was a Monster
When my friend Helen and I saw this in theaters in 1989 (not 1990 like the incorrect info printed on the site), we walked out the theater when Daisy refused to let Hoke come and see Martin Luther King Jr speak. What a disgusting character! And an even more prejudice and racist screenplay by producers who wanted to make the movie seem sugary sweet. It’s a really bad attempt to make guilty liberals feel good about themselves.
Jessica Tandy also didn’t deserve an Oscar for basically being in a bad mood for two hours. Michelle Pfeiffer (The Fabulous Baker Boys) was robbed. And for a much more complex performance. Anyone could have done what Tandy did.
Morgan Freeman also was unbearable (eg “yessir”, “ yesa master”). Oh he was cringeworthy!
And Dan Akroyd gave a more realized performance in Ghostbusters then he did in his only Oscar nominated role here.
Back to Daisy- an inpatient and cruel old witch who should have been sent to a nursing home the moment she crashed her son’s car. She is nothing but rude to Freeman’s character, yelling at him for the dumbest things:
“You leave my garden alone!”
“You don’t go nosing through my things!” (He’s looking at her photo on the wall of the house!)
“You leave the maid alone. She has work to do.”
“Is this YOUR car? Do YOU pay for the gas?”
“Get ready to turn! Look out! Pull in right here.”
Accused him of stealing food. “They all steal you know.”
What a cruel person. What a cruel world. I almost am in tears writing this review.
The whole story is an excuse for us to watch as she bosses an old, tired black man around and reminisce about her days as a young gal in Georgia.
Do yourself a favor- skip this one.
