This is the most underrated film ever made in the 80s
I recently came across this review which worded perfectly not only why this movie was so good, but also why it was so hated and misunderstood:

This movie is simply amazing, although probably a little too complicated for the average teenager to comprehend. If there is only one 80's movie with true depth instead of only pure fun, it's Dream A Little Dream!
Complicated is correct. Not only in the plot, but also the mixup of genres. No other film moulded so many genres together, it takes an open mind to understand the spiritual depth and fun of this movie.
Also, I think that poor timing may have played a role as well. This was the Corey's 3rd movie costarring together - TLB, LTD, then DALD. The public were getting Corey fatigue by the time this movie came out in 89. Kind of in the same way that nobody wants to go on Facebook anymore.
If this movie came out in 87 before TLB or LTD, it probably would've been huge. TLB would've still killed it if it came out 3rd, because that had so many other deciding factors going for it. Equally though if LTD came out 3rd in 89 and DALD came out in 87, I think LTD would've tanked too. share
