Film should have been nominated for the following

This film should have at least been in contention for the Oscars, I would guess for films released in 1990 because it was 1990 when it was released in the U.S. I would give it.

Best Picture - (Over Ghost)
Best Director - Peter Greenaway (Over Stephen Frears)
Best Actor - Michael Gambon (Over, well this is a tough one, maybe Costner)
Best Actress - Helen Mirren (Over Meryl Streep)
Best Original Screenplay - Peter Greenaway (Over Green Card, Ghost or Alice)
Best Cinematography - Sacha Vierny (Over Henry and June or Avalon)
Best Art Direction - Ben Van Os & Jan Roefls (Jeez a tough category)
Best Film Editing - John Wilson (Over Ghost)
Best Original Score - Michael Nyman (Over Ghost)

I wholeheartedly agree. Especially for art direction and score.

It was released in the US in 1990, so it would have been up against the two mighty film juggernauts of 'Dances With Wolves' and 'Goodfellas'. I suppose you could also add in something like 'Reversal of Fortune' in there. A good selection of films but, 'The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and Her Lover' was in a whole different league cinematicly.
