Uneven/Cropped DVD Transfer

I purchased a copy of Black Rain (region 4). It is a widescreen version of the film. As I zoomed the picture to fit my 4:3 television, the picture zoomed up unevenly leaving a large black bar at the top while the bottom of screen was ok. It appeared that the top of the film was cropped. Has anyone else encounted this problem ?

Buy a widescreen tv and watch the Anamorphic DVD image.

or watch it in Letterbox on a 4:3 tv. Never zoom your movies, you'll loose too much of the original image.

That's what you get for making a dvd pan&scan. Movies are shot widescreen for a reason, & zooming in chops up to 40% of your picture off. Makes no sense to me, but like McDonald's says "Have it your way".
