I had an old copy of this on a dodgy svcd and the picture was dreadful and it was really dark. I recently picked up the blu-ray and the quality is fantastic, great detail for an old movie but it's still really dim. I know it's mean to be dark in places but I think that some of the scenes were just too dim.

I know what you mean, but it adds to the story...Japan being very industrious in the 80s, with lot of pollution, and not to mention many of the scenes happening at night. It gives a very surreal quality to the film, like Blade Runner.
