Pretty cool facts there :) Didn't notice that it was his face on Jubei. Gutting that he died after making the film, but it's an inspiration to me. Like it was said in Gladiator, we can seldom choose how or when we die, but we can choose how we face that end. I deeply respect Matsuda's acceptance of death, and how he tried to immortalise himself in this way before it came :)
Kung fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene...
I agree, it is a testament to the human spirit and will. But seeing how he has been immortalised in games and anime (spike speigals character in cowboy bebop was an inspiration for a character Yusaku played in TV series Tantei Monogatari), his memory will live on.

Kind of gives you a sense of what good actors feel about their films. Immortalization in film is a concept that not many actors seem to think of. They seem to approach it from a 'celebrity' point of view, which is wrong. A good actor thinks about the work and the story and the film. This Sato was a great actor in the little I saw of him.
shareI was shocked to read that he was so ill, he looked the picture of health. Poor man must have been in tremendous pain during filming.
" Don't that picture look dusty?"
Matsuda's death was shocking. Just as he was about to hit it big in America, he died suddenly. If he hadn't died, he would've been a bigger star internationally.
shareMaybe it was part of his character, but sometimes you could see he was in pain. You see him sitting in front of Sugai at the meeting of the Yakuza bosses. At one point he bends a bit forward and looks down. You can see he's trying to hide his pain, but it's still visible in his face. The fact that he kept on acting in that state simply makes him a great actor. Such a shame he didn't survive his illness. R.I.P.
