It's like 'Yakuza' and 'Red heat' had a ugly baby
I haven't lived in Japan, but did work in Korea for a few years. So many things are off about this movie:
Douglass tries to hard to be that cool, anti-hero 80's cop. Sorry, your no John McClane. The ugly american attitude he displays is pretty retarded. I rarely met anyone who acted like he did off the plane. Is there a cut scene where he explains how his grandfather was killed in WWII?
*The bike scene in the beginning is hilarious:
*Riding motorcycles in winter SUCKS. Nobody willing does it, let alone races and goes to bike meets. Insanely cold and icy roads suck. Bikes are usually winterized like boats.
*Most of the motorcycle gangs in Asia are filled with younger folks. America is unusual to have guys older than 30 cruising around in a bike gang. I ride bikes in Asia and all the gangs are in high school. Your not likely to be jumped by older yakuza on motorcycles.
*Scenery was nice, but it seems like they re-used some sets from blade runner to make japan look more futuristic.
*The buddy cop relationship between Douglass and ken was just plain lacking. Ken did a bang up job as a cop though. Exactly like all the other Korean detectives I've met.
*Japanese characters in this are giving the shaft. Motivations for their actions or even character insights are barely explained(the bad guy has American values). Same for goes for the Blonde woman and Ken. I assume more of Ken's story is on the cutting room floor.

I read ridley scott had some serious problems filming in Japan. I think it shows. There seems to be a really good movie that could have come out of this with better editing or more fleshed out characters.
