Was Babycakes an alternate title?

I swear I saw this movie when it first came out on TV and it was called sugarbabies not babycakes, does anyone else remember it being called that? I think it originally aired around Valentines day back in the late 1980's

reply

Why is it even called Babycakes? it has nothing to do with the film!

'Sugar Baby' would have been more appropriate

reply

Sugarbaby was the title of the original film, I think it was a German or Swedish movie. I'm pretty sure Babycakes (the U.S. remake) never had a different title.

reply

i thought it was called that too, but i was only 8 years old when it was first on tv and maybe i was confused.

reply

Well, I found some press stuff about the movie when it originally aired on TV. Sure enough, it was called Babycakes.

reply

it was a remake of a german film called Zuckerbaby. in the original movie, it ends at the party scene where the girlfriend confronts them and leaves the 'ther woman' crying on the floor. most sad.

interesting to note that Ricki's other most popular film, Mrs Winterbourne, is also a remake of a german film!

**I found enlightenment! It was behind the sofa!!!!**

reply

Neither one of these movies are her more popular films. I like Babycakes, but hardly anyone else has heard of it. Mrs. Winterbourne is eh. Neither have very high imdb.com ratings (rated by users). Ricki Lake has been in three movies that are considered cult classics and are much more popular then either of these movies. These include the original Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and Serial Mom. All of these movies also have higher user ratings on imdb also. I like Babycakes but it is not one of Ricki's more popular movies since not many people even know about the movie. And of the movies that Ricki was a lead in, Mrs. Winterbourne was probably the least popular.

reply

Yes! I knew I wasn't nuts. This movie was called Sugarbaby when I first saw it, not Babycakes. So, rest assured, you were correct.

reply

The movie with Ricki Lake was ALWAYS Babycakes.

SugarBaby or Zuckerbaby was the German or Swedish movie that did NOT star Ricki Lake.

reply

i also remember this movie title and i though it was sugarbabies.

reply

I also remembered this as being titled "Sugar Baby." I even tried looking it up just now on IMDb that way. I might have been remembering that it was based on a German film called that though. I also remember that the opening song had the title in it and wasn't the song used one with "babycakes" in it?

reply

i am sure that it was called sugarbaby. i think that the film was named after the sweets that they both bought at the train station.

reply

Oy. This version was always called Babycakes. I taped it on the night it originally aired, I still have the tape, and it is most definitely Babycakes.

reply

Yes, the Ricki Lake version was ALWAYS called Babycakes. I have the original press kit on the movie for crying out load! The OTHER VERSION was called Sugarbaby, the version that did NOT star Ricki Lake.

reply

I thought it was called "Big Girls don't Cry " at one time??? I could be wrong .... i still love this movie!

reply

When I saw it the first on tv MANY years ago I could almost bet money it was called "Big girls don't cry." Then a few years later I saw it titled on tv as "Babycakes" and I was like "huh?"

reply

I seem to have a foggy memory of it being called sugar baby too. there maybe a regional difference in the title that was originally aired, but I was 11 at the time so I can't be sure. One thing I do know is that title changes do take place. For instance, there was a Winona Ryder TV movie with Rob Lowe, that I loved called "Home is where the Heart Is" and when I looked for the movie years later, I found it under "Square Dance", true story. I think it was advertised as sugar baby or aired as Sugar Baby in some places and not others.

reply

Like many other people have stated, the version of the movie with Ricki Lake was always called Babycakes. The German version of the movie was Sugarbabies. I guess it is possible that some TV station changed the name when they reran it to Sugarbabies...though not sure if that is even legal. But the Ricki Lake version was called Babycakes in the original run. I saw it when it first came on TV and it was Babycakes not Sugarbabies. That was how I knew what movie to look for when I searched for it to buy.

reply

It was always called Baby cakes! Hence the theme song 'Baby cakes!!!!'. Get over it.

reply

the movie babycakes in based on is a 1985 German movie called "Zuckerbaby" AKA "Sugarbaby."

But as far as I know, the American version starring Ricki Lake and Craig Sheffer, was always called "Babycakes." A few years ago I found a tv schedule for the first brodcast of the American version, and it was listed as "Babycakes."

reply

I love the theme song. It's one of the best things about the movie.........so unusual!

But I just love everything about this movie.
