How should it have ended?

People seem dissatisfied with the ending(s)
"First contact with Aliens" movies are always going to be tricky to end.
Close encounters? contact?
Many of them have a medal draped General yelling "Blow it up mr president!"

anyhoo:
Theatrical: aliens rescue Bud ,show him they've been watching our pointless violence on tv, bring him to surface

Extended: aliens rescue Bud ,show him they've been watching our pointless violence on tv, threaten to wipe us out with tsunamis , bring him to surface

Anyone got better ideas?

When I saw it in the theaters, I honestly thought Bud, like Richard Dreyfus's character in Close Encounters, would simply "go away" with the aliens after they explained why they saved him

Or maybe they return him to the station, leaving no other evidence they were there. The main cast may or may not tell everyone on the surface, but they know they won't be believed

I didn't like bringing the entire base to the surface, since there was nothing before that to suggest the aliens' ability to remotely decompress all the humans. If they had abilities that advanced, how could they let the submariners die?

reply

They probably considered that a bunch of warmongering submariners carrying nuclear weapons around didnt qualify for saving

Oh ... forgot about that part. Yeah, I can see the aliens saying "heck with those guys"

Original ending was better. Why I will never see this horse shit re-imagining Cameron cooked up for 4K theater release.

reply

Cameron was one of two things when he was young. Either a stooge who didn't want to rape and kill the kid. Or a stooge who did rape and kill the kid and changed his mind. You can't wind back time. Mr. Terminator.

The extended cut has the original ending.

Forgot to mention, I don't recall the theatrical cut having much by way of "watching our pointless violence on TV"

Or at least, they show Bud a lot MORE of the pointless violence while raising the tsunami walls
