Swimming that deep underwater.

In one scene Ed Harris and some other rube swim out of the rig without any sort of protection and just holding their breath. While some people can hold their breath for awhile. And they can stand the cold. What about the pressure. Wouldn't their ear drums rupture. I remeber I dived to the bottom of a fifteen foot pool once and when I came up my ears hurt like hell.

True, the water pressure would kill them. However, I believe they were careful to stay under the rig. The rig is supporting all the water pressure from above.

Check out my profile, proceed at own risk.

Uh, physics doesn't work like that.

hilarious!

they are pressurized to the same pressure as the water. that's the point of the early scene where Lindsay and the marines spend time in the compression chamber.

so swimming down there is not a problem. the problem would be ascending as fast as they did (which is why they are all shocked that they are alive/didn't get the bends when they are above water in the last few scenes)
