Could someone please explain to me why the pilot takes place on a pony express station that looks lush and green and even wet and then suddenly the place looks like they're in the middle of a drought? I've always wondered.
Well Ill explain this the best I can. After time wears on and if certain routes are taken over and over again there evertually bevomes a path. ANd as time were on the more that path is used the moore it turns to dust (ive seen this a lot) and since there are Riders frequently soming on and out all over the place at Emma's the more the grass is eventually dont to turn to dust, drought or not. Its harder to explain easier to observe here.
For example: ...Pony rides I used to see at the local sunday flea market when I was a kid. Now these horses would walk in a circle for a few minutes taking their little passengers on rides, the more they walk in a circle the more worn and tramped down the grass will become, and after a while, eventually it turned into dust... As did the flea market itself.. the heavier the traffic of people or vehicles or animals the more the grass is worn away and evenually leaving nothing but dust.
As I mentioned before Its kinda hard to explain it if you dont live in the country. This is just something I got used to seeing when I grew up.
I think the exterioirs for the express station in the pilot was filmed in a different location than the rest of the series. Not sure about that, but Emma's house and yard looked different, if I remember right. I don't have the DVD yet, though, so I could be remembering it wrong.
I believe that for the pilot the outside scene at the Station were filmed somewhere in California before they set up in Arizona, where the rest of the series was filmed.
The pilot was filmed at Columbia State Historic Park, an old mining town in the California gold country and the surrounding areas. Early publicity shots that were done after the series got picked up (before they began production at Old Tucson) were shot at Paramount Ranch, the same location in the Santa Monica Mountains in the LA area where Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman was filmed. Some of those shots are used as the box cover and DVD case covers for the Season 1 Young Riders DVD set.
