The pilot for The Young Riders was shot at Columbia State Historic Park, an old mining town in the California gold mining country and the surrounding areas. Publicity photos for Season 1 of the series were shot at Paramount Ranch, a recreational and film location site in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area of Southern California, which with I work as a volunteer. (Home of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman when that show was in production.) The cover shot for the Season 1 DVD set, as well as the covers for some of the inside plastic disk cases, are some of those early publicity photos.
The remainder of the series was shot at Old Tucson Studios in Tucson, Arizona and its adjuct set, called Mescal, which is approximately 40 minutes away. Old Tucson operates as a tourist attraction, so you can visit it. However, a bad fire destroyed many of the original sets in the 1990's (after The Young Riders had completed production, I believe). When they rebuilt, they didn't really recreate what had been there before, sadly. So, the "new" Old Tucson doesn't have the historical feel so much anymore. Nor, buildings that you would recognize from The Young Riders too much. At one time, they offered tours of the Mescal set, but, I don't think they are doing that at the present time. At least, not the last time I looked at the Old Tucson website.
