Show has been "bad" longer than it has been good

Somewhere in 02/03 the show started to go downhill. Even outside of the golden age, the first 14 seasons ranged from great to good to okay (tolerable). Here we are now on season 30, and the last 16 seasons have been crap compared to the golden area, not say there have been some seasons with great episodes.

I haven't watched any new episodes since 2011, but some people say the last few years have gotten better, is this true? FXX runs the Simpsons all the time, but I can't drag myself to watch show past season 14. Did the show hit rock bottom in the late 2000s?

I check the IMDb episode list every month or so looking for good ratings. Only one above 8 (barthood) and another almost 8 (flanders ladder) in last four seasons. I keep lowering my standards and look for any above 7 now. THOH usually has one good skit.

Back in season 20 almost half were above 7. Don't forget to lower your IMDb rating if you haven't done so lately!

I cant watch the new episodes, their utter garbage , Seasons 3 to 12 is what i consider the golden age of Simpsons

That's about where I am as well. The early seasons have so many good memories for me. I was young, newly married, and my sons were young.

sniff..

indeed, loved them , still watch the golden age now and again , fast paced, quirky, so funny, so many great one liners, perfect

The show has ruined its legacy with this inferior, average, shadow of its former self period that has gone on now for almost 20 years. 10 or so years ago if I ever saw the question 'What are the best ever TV shows?' on say forums or message boards, this show tended to be the answer people would instinctively give. Saw the question pop up in the last year, and barely anybody mentioned it. I guess that is partly down to new great shows that have come into existence since, but I'm pretty sure it's also because of how you can now associate this show with how downhill it's gone and having more bad than good. Such a shame.

It's time for this show to hang it up.

I haven't truly followed the series since around 2000, but every once in a while I catch a new episode and I have to admit that I haven't been moved to laughter by any of them. It just feels like a show with no real plot anymore. Every episode is filled with short current events/political skits made up of whatever the characters are watching on TV.

I don’t understand why they still make this show. They should just put it out of its misery.

I check in for a new episode every year or so. Just to see how the show is doing. Bad Simpsons is interesting. The show isn't funny anymore, nor do I feel it even functions as a satire of the nuclear family any longer. But it is something of a rather unique time capsule of the world we live in. I think in the future, 50 years from now, a hundred, more, this show will be seen as a great masterwork of what life used to be. It's truly a unique perspective on things. Being both a loving tribute and hyper critical at the same time. And I still think the show is very good at being clever. They've kept the pretty same "bad" quality for a long time now. That's their steady mark. And I think it's a passing grade.

Its good enough to keep making new episodes I guess, but its just a shame we won't see anything come close to the golden age of the Simpsons again

reply

i try to check in every now and then , last time i tried it at random it was a 20 year old episode. again.

reply

It my not be as great as it used to be, but I wouldn't consider it bad. The new episodes are still good.

reply

If you ask me, it hasn't really been that good since the 20th season.
