You get the feeling Matt Groening doesn't like Shirley Temple given that he has her eaten in the Simpsons while singing "On The Good Ship Lollipop".

Remembering my childhood forced tap dancing lessons and uncomfortable nights with my hair in curlers because my mom thought i would be the next Shirley Temple...

It's kind of amusing in its own way that Russi Taylor used her Martin Prince voice for Shirley in THOH III . The thought of Shirley Temple really being a boy is hilarious.

I don't know if Matt Groening didn't like Shirley Temple but I know Shirley Temple didn't like The Simpsons.

Bill Cosby also didn't like The Simpsons likely because the show beat The Cosby's Show's ratings.

That isn't at all the reason why he dislikes The Simpsons, least of all because The Simpsons DIDN'T beat Cosby in the ratings.

Matt Groening did not write that episode, so I doubt that it reflects his personal views on Shirley Temple. You'd have to ask Jay Kogan and Wallace Wolodarsky.

Did the forgotten generations scream or go full of resignation, quietly protesting innocence?

I don't think they hate her. They did offer her the part of Vicki Valentine, but she declined. (Which was probably a good thing. Tress MacNeille really made that character funny.)
