No Loan Again, Naturally or How crappy was season 20?

I'm rewatching S20 and boy!
No Loan Again, Naturally has to be one of the worst episodes out there. What were the writers thinking???

Lisa, the drama queen, Homer and Lisa Exchange Cross Words, How the Test Was Won were great episodes but otherwise, this season seems to be clattered with really random episodes with bizarre endings.
What do you guys think?

reply

Yah, I found season 20 kind of disappointing. For me, that season is the shows lowest point. Luckily it picks back up in 21, which I thought was a great season.

reply

I did not like Season 20. I will say that was the last season I watched before I grew tired of how stale the newer seasons felt to me.

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Pantera, and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fan.

reply

Wait, you think that No Loan Again, Naturally was a bad episode?

I'll admit that the story is rather predictable, but this was one of the better episodes that season, one thing in particular that is good about it is that the story is very character driven, rather than the wacky plot driven antics that have been the focus of most episodes of recent seasons.

reply

Agreed, thought this was one of the better of the season. Would say the following episode Gone, Maggie, Gone was one of their worst though. Thought there were actually a few strong episodes this season, like Dangerous Curves. But yea there were more frequent weaker ones.

reply

Maybe its because I'm a fan of the Professor Layton games, but I thought Gone, Maggie, Gone was great. Dangerous Curves was one of the ones I didn't really care for.

reply

I like Dangerous Curves for the moments with Bart and Lisa, past and present.

I believe in the right to bear arms, as long as my arms are the ones that are being beared.

reply

I actually quite liked the episode. It had the heart and morals of the early seasons, some good jokes (like roasting a chicken over the gas leak), and it paced and ended well. Season 20 wasn't a bad season in my book. It was definitely better than some other seasons. If I'm being real honest here, season 13 was the real low point of the series.

reply

No way--- 13 was fine and not the real low point. Later teen seasons would take that distinction.
You'll find many enjoyable episodes in season 13.

Nah, it was a pretty spectacularly bad season. The episodes weren't memorable, the jokes were off, and even the halloween episode wasn't great. And in a weird trending change for the worse, the plotlines featured a bunch of the characters being objectively terrible people. Lisa goes to a ranch, has a crush on a boy and tries to kill his sister. Apu cheats on Manjula. Patty and Selma in "Half Decent Proposal" were ten times more obnoxious than usual. "Brawl in the Family" is just an all around awful episode that changed plots halfway through. I could go on and on about how awful it is. It is my least favorite season.

I would say 14 was worse than 13 -- wouldn't you say, greenman?

Your list of issues with 13 is pretty good and I laughed at the "brawl in the family" changing of the plot because that was no doubt quite a moment for the show- and not in a great way.
. Having Delroy Lindo as a guest star was funny though and the "wings" references.

Also in reply to the season 13 TOH: house of whacks is one of the best treehouse segments of all time.
I thought Wiz Kids was ok, not terrible, not great -- and Hex and the City was better than average.

Nope, I still like 14 better. House of Whacks might've been decent, but it sat in the middle of a crapshoot, and Delroy Lindo was just playing off of his role in "A Life Less Ordinary" and half the viewers probably didn't get it. He might've been the only saving grace for the episode in question, but he wasn't even there for the odd second half of it.

And it's "green m&ms" lol. I'm a girl. Confusing because of the Riddler avatar, I know.

I know I didn't, also when I re-watched that episode for the second time since I first saw it, I through Delroy London's character was white for some reason, weird how the mind plays tricks on you.

Yeah, like how I always think the storylines for "Brawl in the Family" are two separate episodes. Then I watch it and I'm disappointed all over again... 

Really? Wow I didn't think I'd ever hear that 14 ranked above 13.

Helter Shelter and Pray Anything are two of the worst episodes of all time! Really, you like season 14 better? So many eps in 14 were much worse than 13. George Plimpton was a highlight in the Spelling Bee episode but wow, even that's a guest stretch.

I will say that the TOH in season 14 was really good-- Clones, the right to scare arms, and the dr Hibbert island.

I'm surprised you would think that when you have "Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge" and "Gump Roast" in your season 13 lineup. Helter Shelter really isn't that bad, IMO.

Although, I will concede that I thought "Dude Where's My Ranch" was season 13. It is in fact in 14.

We are proving that 13 and 14 are subpar in many respects.
I think 15 was an improvement and set a course for some decent seasons until about 18/19.

Also, backing up to 11-12; I did like those ones... did you?

reply

I still like the majority of 14 even if it did have the dude ranch episode.

And I agree that 15-18 aren't terrible.
