Arnold Palmer?

Monty Burns Fleeing Circus actually had a rather inane Arnold Palmer joke involving lemonade and iced tea, and on the day the episode airs, Arnold Palmer passed away.

And no one has posted about this yet?

So what? Are you going to claim that it was the joke that killed him?

I came here to check this. What a weird coincidence...

I know! This is so weird! In the episode, Homer is filling up super soakers, one with lemonade and the other with iced tea. Marge asks Homer what he's doing. He tells Marge that he and Carl are going to "Arnold Palmer" Lenny. Marge questions the idea, and Homer, trying to explain it to her and believing she's unaware of Arnold Palmer and his eponymous drink, says, "You see, Arnold Palmer WAS this golfer..."

My initial reaction was what does he mean by "was"? Last time I checked, Arnold Palmer was still alive. Literally five minutes ago, I switched on the local news and discovered Arnold Palmer passed away just a few hours ago.

How did Homer know?!

reply

I think that they were referencing that Arnold Palmer (who was 87 when he died today) was a retired golfer. As in "no longer plays golf professionally"

Homer knew about Jose Fernandez, too. Unfortunately, Jose never had a drink named after him, so Homer couldn't fill Super Soakers in his honor.

reply

Huh.

I think I remember James L. Brooks saying that they could change a line or the chalkboard gag with very little time before the episode aired. Maybe that's what they did. They also managed that live episode recently. I guess the technology is evolving so that the season can be more topical.

It wasn't just a line, it was a couple scenes with the Super Soakers and the iced tea and lemonade. Palmer's death was announced like an hour after the show aired... so this was a coincidence. Homer didn't predict a death. It was a gag based on the beverage named after Arnold Palmer, nothing about him passing away.

I am 99% certain that you're right -- Homer was saying that he no longer plays golfs professionally (except in the Xarelto commercial with Kevin Nealon). Still, though, it was a strange coincidence. This is not the first time The Simpsons has seemed to have predicted the future.

Did he die? Some people can live through.

I believe in the right to bear arms, as long as my arms are the ones that are being beared.

I came to this board just to see if someone had mentioned this and if not, I was going to make a post about it because that's just so weird.

As did I

But................. SO The 2003 Halloween ep Death pays a call to the Simpsons 2 days later My Grandmother age 97 died

Gonna have a Arnold Palmer now

And that's my two cents

reply

Not a coincidence. The Simpsons and other cartoons have been huge predictive programmers for years and years. Look it up. Along with family guy predicting Bruce jenners transition, 9/11, Boston bombings, and more. Mad world. Glad people are at least noticing.

reply

Not a coincidence.

Yes, it is. It's just a coincidence.

Along with family guy predicting ... 9/11
The irony is that 9/11 almost killed FG.

reply

Arnold Palmer died because the episode was so bad.

I thought that he died of embarrassment from The Steelers getting whipped in Philadelphia.
