The moment Judyann Elder became the iconic mom of your childhood...

Anyone else mourning her passing this morning.

Thanks guys love to everyone this sad day!

I remember the exchange:

Karl: "NO, NO, Don't slam pie...:

And then in classic Judyann Elder fashion she mutters under breath ..:

f___ you__ this might have been the 3rd to last episode.

I see you're trolling:

..

reply

I'm not trolling. She was in maybe 5 episodes of the series and I didn't hear anything about her dying.

reply

LEGEND in the sitcom world.

How she fooled the millions of viewers like you and I.

...legend!

reply

Yeah, they were best talking JoMarie into staying. She acts like the reason she left was because her contract was up or something, but I'm sure it was REALLY because of the fight she had with Jaleel on set two episodes before her last one. HMM...

It seems redundant they would recast such a major role THIS LATE INTO A SHOW, what a stupid one. And they pick the woman who looks or acts NOTHING like JoMarie and like they did with Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince, reduced her to a nagging housewife with nothing to contribute. They completely change the character on account of the recast and it sickens me when they do this. You might as well have a new character there.

I read an article where one of the producers said they didn't want to divorce the couple or kill her off. Reasonable, but RECASTING shouldn't have even been a thought. I'd simply write Harriette out going on vacation somewhere and probably would have had Rachel come back, kept Richie on the show, and continued like that. Maybe had JoMarie come back in the last episode (because by the filming of that they knew the show was cancelled) and call it a day. I hate the direction they took this season.

Do you have a link for the fight?

Thanks! for the response.

I was being a bit snarky, but that's some interesting as shit stuff.

reply

News on it only came out over two years ago but here is a video talking about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSQuQ8SsY_M.

reply

Thanks for the link! It's a fascinating obscure TV fact that nobody seems to know about.

reply

Although, I wonder where source links are.

Particularly, The Hollywood Reporter source.

How did this YT video get the quotes? That kind of thing.

By Episode 8 or 9, the show was already doomed on CBS because the cast (and their agents) have already taken a look a look at the ratings. Friday Night Family night on CBS or whatever they called it at the time...wasn't going so well.

And White's rise as Urkel would be a rocky start, because it fundamentally transformed a popular program not seen since two decades prior with the FONZ on "Happy Days".

It's interesting because prior to "Steve Urkel", the show was already popular.

And it was a family show, almost like "The Cosby Show", while not nearly as popular...but still popular.

Ego will always rule in Hollywood no matter what platform.

reply

I wouldn't say the show was popular prior to Urkel. It was simply starting out by the time he came on and while the ratings were good at best they weren't OUT OF THIS WORLD great. Had he not been brought on I don't think the show would have lasted as long as it did. You have to admit, the show did feel like it was missing something in those early episodes and needed that edge to truly get the spark going. Urkel provided that, though he was overused over the years and even Jaleel wanted them to cut back on his screentime, but this didn't happen. Not sure why he didn't take a better stand to make this happen. The move to CBS was the perfect opportunity to scale his role back and get the show back to where it was in the beginning to an extent, but they opted not to do this.

reply

Thanks again for the link.

Really great stuff!

Jaleel recently did an interview with The Breakfast Club podcast promoting his book, denying the altercation. He even asked the hosts, "Why does her word validate over mine?" or something along those lines and even claiming it's odd something like that would come out twenty years later to further prove how wrong this is, but it's not really a good argument because things like that can be kept hidden. He doesn't strike me as a liar and neither does JoMarie, but there has to be some truth in this matter.

He did shed some light on why Judy wasn't given much to do because during table reads Jaimee Foxworth wasn't delivering her lines as good so they re-arranged the script and gave her the bear minimum. Also blames her mother for why she was kicked off the show though according to Jaimee in her own interview with Armon Wiggins, her mother was fighting to give her more to do on the show and this irked the producers who just decided to rid her entirely.

reply

I saw that interview.

It just seems strange to me, no offense to Jaimee but having the mom suddenly become a DIFFERENT mom seems bizarre.

Especially by season 9.

Also, btw again for the link.

A spinoff character is connected by the actor, you don't recast them and nine seasons into a show, ridiculous. They should have talked JoMarie into staying, but I feel they had strife with her likely due to her issues with Jaleel and the show's direction. The bizarre recasting was their way of being shady and showing how little she meant to them. Yeah, she was the reason the show existed since it was to be about her and her family, but Steve came in and took over and he was the face of it to them and not her. If Jaleel were to leave would they recast him? Nope.

I read an article years back on which one of the producers said they didn't want to kill her off or divorce her and Carl, but they could have handled that better. The recasting would have worked better if they wrote the change into the show and given Steve's wacky inventions, they could have pulled this off. Harriette wants to look younger so she jumps in Steve's chamber to do so, but she winds up looking different. The machine breaks and Steve is gonna need to take some time to fix it so she, the family, and others have to adjust to her new look for god knows how long until JoMarie was able to return. I would have liked that approach because it respects the continuity and JoMarie's appearance.
