When Family Matters Died

Family Matters was one of the most popular sitcoms of its time and gave birth to Steve Urkel who could be called both the savior of the series and its destroyer. But I also think there were other factors that led to Family Matters’ decline as well. So here’s my take on how and when Family Matters died.

Time Stamps:
00:00 - Why "Family Matters” Mattered
00:55 - Welcoming the Winslows
2:17 - Enter the Urkel
3:12 - Expanding the Winslow’s World
5:08 - 3 Signs of Decay
7:09 - Point of No Return
7:24 - Family Changed Too Much
8:34 - Relationship Issues
11:05 - Too Many Alter-Egos
12:00 - Too Many Inventions
12:41 - The Verdict

Yeah, I was re-watching the series on Hulu a few years ago (it's now only available on HBO as of this posting) and it kinda got dull around the last two seasons. It's only saving grace was that it ended with Steve getting back home from space, and he and Laura were engaged.

Family Matters or as many have come to call it The Steve Urkel Show was one of the biggest shows of the 90s.

It saw success that most shows could only dream of attaining --- but it wasn't all good.

Today we take a look at The Day It Died.

What's peculiar, is only the first season is available on dvd, and no others, whereas Full House has all seasons on dvd. Makes you wonder why Family Matters, which was the better and longer-running show, is not being shown the same consideration.

I only watched a few episodes when it originally aired, but I'm watching the reruns. Nine years is a long time to maintain interest for any show.

"Steve getting back home from space"

That sounds funny. Sorry I missed it.

I agree with most of his points. At some point, the series transitioned into a sort of humorous science fiction series. It's good that they gave Urkel more screen time; without him, the show is only mediocre. However, they didn't have to abandon storylines involving the family members. Additionally, I didn't appreciate how Steve treated Myra. I believe they make a much better couple couple than Laura and Steve - and make more sense.

I don't think it was the grandmother's departure that initiated the decline of the series. She was not a significant enough character.
