Characters that liked Steve

As we all know, Steve's character was that of an annoying geek. And while other characters would occasionally stick up for him and had their moments of being nice to him, only three characters on the show wholly liked him: Mother Winslow, Myra, and Richie.

Steve/Mother Winslow: Steve and Mother Winslow were close friends for the entire series. Unlike the others that lived there (besides Richie), Estelle always enjoyed Steve's visits and considered him one of her surrogate grandchildren. Further, she was one of the only characters that was aware of just how abusive his parents were to him.

Steve/Myra: Myra loved Steve the way Steve loved Laura. In fact, she loved Steve so much so, that she had his picture all over her room on the walls, on the rug, on her blanket, and even on her pajamas. And even though, Myra crossed the line when Steve dumped her in the final season, you could definitely sense her hurt in the situation. There was rarely a character that loved him that much.

Steve/Richie: Steve and Richie were fairly close. In fact, Richie would affectionately call him "Uncle Steve". Steve would also occasionally help Richie out in various situations: helping him overcome his fear of the dentist, helping him with a science project, and helping him and 3J fend off a group of bullies at a park just to name a few instances.

Not that the other characters didn't like Steve, like I said, they had their moments when they were nice to him. It's just that Mother Winslow, Myra, and Richie were the three regular characters that were nice to Steve on a regular basis.

Don't forget Rachel. She was always nice to him. There was also Harriette. While she at least once celebrated with her family right after Steve left for vacation, she was otherwise nice to him whenever he was around.

But there was a reason why all of these characters were okay with Steve. It's because they were the ones who never really had to put up with Steve's antics, whereas Carl, Eddie and Laura were the ones whom Steve wanted to be around the most and whose feelings Steve cared the least about.

reply

Yeah I don't know if I'd be able to tolerate his clumsiness and property damage but he still had feelings and was a human being, who had parents who hated him. I don't know why he didn't live with his Uncle Cecil. I think that's his only relative who cared about him. I kind of feel the same way about a friend of mine's wife. I can't stand her perky Mary Sue demeanor and don't like being around her most of the time (which isn't too often, thank God) but she still does have feelings and I have to respect her when she's around, no matter how hard it is.

Rachel even risked her own life to save Steve's. Steve got drunk at a rooftop party and fell over the edge, only managing to save himself by grabbing onto a clothesline. IIRC, Rachel (I don't know why she was even there) walked across the clothesline like a tightrope to get to Steve and pull him to safety.

I'm pretty sure Myra had to put up with Steve's antics often enough though. After all, Steve DID go steady with her for three years.

When Steve trip over things Myra just look at him with a look and then reach in to grab and kiss him. It was cute seeing them together. Anyways, Steve wasn't a bad guy i have to agree with the property damage I bet their Bill was sky high in damages.

Yeah, Steve was at his clumsiest around those three.

It's not just being clumsy. He was very rude and imposing.

To Carl, he was always "Hey Big Guy! I just finished my most dangerous invention yet! Let me test it around you in your MY house!"

To Eddie, he was like "So Eddo! What are you and me and all of your other friends and potential new girlfriends going to do today? Having a party? Great! I'll get my accordion!"

And for Laura, he was like "I'm your man, Laura, my pet! I decide who you can see and where you can go without me! And I will never stop fighting you until you break down crying and surrender to me!" (Cue standing ovation for the most romantic stalker in the show's context)

While there's not quite enough to suggest that he's consciously nicer to others than he is to these three, it's not hard to imagine that he wouldn't dare behave like that to Grandma, Harriette, Rachael, or even Myra.

For the most part, but she did have times where she resented him just like the rest so this ruins her for being on the list. There were TWO occasions she celebrated his leaving. Once in like a Season 2 episode I think where his parents left to go somewhere and the family thought he was going with them, but then after learning he would actually be at home himself she, for some reason, had sudden a change of heart and decided to let him stay with the family. Then the second time, the I'm sure you're referring to, was when we see Myrtle come back in Season 7 after four and a half years.

Was Waldo ever rude to Steve? If not, I'd add him to the list.

reply

No, but there wasn't much interaction between just the two of them like it was with Steve and the characters the OP list above. Plus Waldo never really had much of a say on Steve. I wouldn't really add him to the list for those reasons despite us never really seeing him not standing Steve.

Really? What about all the Steve/Eddie/Waldo episodes? I'd say he interacts much more with Waldo than with Rachel or Harriet

reply

Like I said, JUST THOSE TWO. I get he interacted with Waldo whenever Eddie was around, but I made it clear that weren't really scenes and storylines with JUST THEM TWO. You want to add Waldo to the list fine. I just think there should have been more JUST Waldo/Steve interaction for that to happen.

The relationship between Steve and Waldo is a weird one. They are for the most part fellow members of Club Eddie, they never really had to put up with each other and actually do get along, but scarcely acknowledge that they are actually friends.

Steve at least once told Eddie that he can't fire Waldo from Mighty Weenie because he was their friend.

And Waldo has always been a follower, with a "monkey see, monkey do" kind of mindset, and does stuff whenever someone standing next to him does it. When he followed Willie Fuffner, he showed little actual desire to be mean to Steve, but laughed along with Willie when they got Steve drunk. When he followed Weasel, they both scoffed at the thought of going to Steve's birthday party. And he dances around with Steve's Polka dancing, together they drag Eddie to a party to help him recover from his breakup with Oneisha, and they both poke fun of Eddie when he was going to take ballet lessons.

I think they are friends, despite that the episodes are always about Eddie and Steve, Eddie and Waldo, or Eddie and his friends, but never Steve and Waldo.

reply

My thoughts exactly. The relationship is rather weird, and vague on how Waldo felt to Steve for the most part. Steve had more to say on Waldo than vice versa so we know Steve appreciates Waldo. But there are times Waldo hung around Weasel who was against Steve and participated in making fun of him.

reply

Yes there aren't many episodes where they hang out without Eddie. The only one I remember is the episode about Steve's rope-climbing contest with that guy in season 3. Waldo was Steve's sidekick in that episode.

But I also agree with you, Waldo is usually just a follower, though he's probably more accepting of Steve than Eddie's other friends (Rodney and Weasel)

reply

Well Waldo was partially responsible for almost getting Steve killed when he got drunk at the roof party. Steve actually was mean to Waldo on several occassions because of his stupidity. Waldo was a follower and was only mean to Steve when he was with Weasel or Willie.

Waldo wasn't exactly rude to Steve, but remember the character began as a sidekick to Willie Fuffner, one of Steve's enemies.

Interestingly enough, Steve could be rude to Waldo. Or it was rather that Steve lost his patience with Waldo some times, when he didn't understand something fast enough. But luckily for them both, Waldo was often oblivious to when people were rude to him. So there was no real harm done, and they could mostly be friends.

Intelligence and purity.
