Why Estelle and Richie were dropped to recurring during seasons 8-9?

I wonder why their characters were dropped to recurring in the last two seasons of the show.

i dont know about Richie but i read that Estelle was getting older and couldn't remember her lines as much so she left the show.

That is sad since i knew rosetta had diabetes before she passed. I figured the later years would give richie more to do since he was getting older.

They decided to focus more on 3J. But why was Richie demoted to reoccurring guest star?

Could of been contractual. Bryton was actually billed as special guest star.
