No first season Christmas episode

I noticed that a lot of shows don't have Christmas or even holiday episodes during season one. I wonder why they don't for one? I always try to imagine a first season Family Matters Christmas episode right after Steve Urkel was introduced.

Also, there was no third season Christmas special either eventhough there was a second season special. Wonder why

reply

I assumed that they simply reran the second season Christmas episode in the second season.
As a tv geek, I researched all the tgif episodes in December 1989 and they all were on a long hiatus during the holiday. Ironically, the last new episode to air before the holiday was Steve Urkels first episode!

I meant reran the second season Christmas episode during the third season

A lot of sitcoms don't tend to have like holiday episodes in the first season. Season 2 seems to be when shows start to find their groove of sitcoms. I just wish Family Matters didn't do so many Halloween episodes. The last good one was season 5. The Stevil episodes were too disturbing for me.

The reason why there's no first season Christmas episode is because Family Matters was a mid-season replacement. It was spun from Perfect Strangers. Cousin Larry worked at a newspaper and Harriet Winslow was the building's elevator operator. Carl Winslow appeared too and yes - he was a cop.

"Family Matters" wasn't a mid season replacement. The show first aired in September of 1989.

It would have been strange to see a season one christmas special without Steve Urkel or with baby Richie.

reply

It would have been nice to have had a first season Christmas special but I guess now we are 27 years too late

I believe The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is one of the few shows to have done a Christmas episode in it's first season (Deck The Halls), where Will decorates the mansion for the holidays and the neighbors make a huge outcry about it.
