I saw two of Joe Morgan's segments last night (the tire iron and fraudulent check). The guy was definitely different than most other officers featured on the show. Kind of sad when I heard he passed in September 2020 at the young age of 54. Even the sound man for COPS who wrote along said that it was very shocking, and he actually talked with him a few months before his passing. Just shows that life isn't always fair. His death seemed to be a huge loss for the whole Des Moines Police Department.

reply

I don't remember the fraudulent check episode at all but I always admired Joe Morgan's laid back attitude and how he deals with the public, I was really sad that he died at a fairly young age of 54, I can see why Morgan's death would totally affect the whole Des Moines Police Department considering he seemed like he's the kind of guy who's always fun to be around and brought so much joy out to everyone, that is really interesting that the sound man for COPS actually talked to Morgan a few months before his passing, I know the Des Moines Police Department won't be the same without Morgan.

I have noticed that in the earlier and middle seasons of COPS, the officers used to be a lot more likable compared to the later seasons, where there seem to be slightly more cops with attitudes. I don't know if it's the fact the officers don't appear in more than one segment anymore or not. We could at least tell the personalities of the officers if they were in multiple segments like Morgan and Ryan Cook, who were both likable. I think Jeff Lower was a jerk in every one of his season 16 segments. He seemed to be mean in every one of them.

reply

Another officer who I liked that was likable throughout the run is Randy Sutton of Las Vegas (Seasons 3, 7 and 10), I always liked his sense of humor and how he deals with the public, I feel the same about Tom Jenkins (another Las Vegas officer), I always liked watching the episodes he appears in, I agree both Ryan Cook and Jeff Lower have remained cool and likable all throughout the times they appeared on COPS, I agree with you that Jeff Lower was a decent cop in the earlier episodes he appeared in, I thought he was an ass in one Season 14 episode where he did a traffic stop on a vehicle that was connected to a burglary and got worse in the Season 16 episodes, I have a hard time watching the Lower episodes in Season 16.

reply

Randy and Tom both were good officers.

I'm happy Tom is still alive as he said in a video earlier this year that where he said he was hospitalized for COVID after not getting the vaccine due to his belief the pandemic was over. He said he was going to get it as soon as he felt better. I hope he did. He said getting the virus was the worst feeling he ever had.

reply

I'm also really glad Tom is still alive and has recovered after being hospitalized with COVID after not getting the vaccine, I initially thought COVID was somewhat over this past summer only to realize that it wasn't, I also hope Tom got himself the vaccine, I did feel bad he had to go through COVID, I hope to never catch it myself, Tom Jenkins is definitely fun to watch and I'm glad he'd gotten to appear on many episodes.

Another officer I liked is Iris Reyes from Palm Beach County, FL (Season 19), I thought she and the fellow officers did a great job handling the suspect who wouldn't leave the sub shop after they were closed despite the suspect being belligerent and obnoxious, she still treated the suspect with respect even when he was being difficult towards her, for some reason one of the backup officers Mark Lanier reminds me very much of Win Sargent from the Pierce County episodes (Season 9 and 15)

I remember another episode she did a great job handing an angry, quick tempered woman who'd gotten arrested for battery.

reply

She was probably my favorite of the Palm Beach deputies. She seems calm and polite in tough situations whereas others will be more aggressive.

Lanier appeared in quite a few episodes from seasons 18-21 and seemed decent, but nothing too special.

reply

I didn't have any issues with Mark Lanier either, he didn't have too much of a personality that stood out despite him reminding me of Win Sargent, Iris Reyes was definitely one of the best officers of the later Palm Beach County episodes, I do admire her for being calm and polite towards the suspects no matter how they treat her, I do admit she looks sexy wearing leather gloves.

reply

Another officer I really liked was Brandon Gish from Brevard County. He was the Deputy who stopped the one Black Guy for being a potential battery suspect and a broken taillight, but the attention later turned to him eating a large amount of weed. He was very calm where many others would've been aggressive and raised their voice for destroying drugs. Many people wondered if he used weed too by how calm he was to the suspect. This was Season 19.

reply

I remember that episode and I remember cringing about the suspect eating the weed considering that he did turn a misdemeanor into a felony, I agree many officers would've been aggressive and started raising their voice for destroying the drugs, I did admire Brandon Gish for keeping his cool the whole time he was dealing with the subject, I sometimes wonder the same thing myself if Gish smoked weed since he was calm towards the suspect, I like seeing officers keeping their cool while dealing with the suspect.

reply

I remember many people commenting saying that if more cops were like Gish, law enforcement would be more respected.

reply

I would definitely have to agree with you, I wonder if Brandon Gish appeared in more episodes because he would definitely be a fun officer to watch.

reply

I believe that's the only segment he appeared in.

reply

Did you see the segment of William Hutchinson and the car thief? I thought he acted very excessive. Guy looked like he was trying to shake his hand, which Hutchinson accused him of grabbing him onto him and threw him to the ground. I didn't really feel sorry for the suspect as he tried to fight with the elderly Hispanic suspect, but that was excessive at the beginning. Hutchinson can be great and funny in some segments, but arrogant in others.

reply

I did and totally agreed he acted very excessive and went overboard by throwing the suspect down to the ground, I felt Officer Hutchinson could've kept his cool while dealing with the suspect instead of throwing the suspect down to the ground, the suspect did have issues but Officer Hutchinson didn't need to be using excessive force on the suspect, he's definitely one officer I have mixed feelings about, did he ever appear on the Season 19 episodes?

I do find the suspect to be a total jerk once Officer Hutchinson threw him to the ground and don't really feel all that sorry for him either since he tried to break into the vehicles and then tried picking a fight with the suspect, the suspect did seem to be relieved that he was only getting off with a couple of misdemeanor crimes which I thought was interesting

I used to get this episode you mentioned with the episode where the suspect calls Officer Hutchinson a fathead, I thought Hutchinson fared a lot better in that episode.

What do you think of Officer Paul Heckler from Palm Beach County, Florida (Season 18)? I think he comes across kind of aggressive and arrogant while dealing with the suspects.

reply

I think he appeared in the season 19 segment with the couple in the motel room with drugs on the bed, and both were arrested when they weren't clear about whose drugs were who's. Hutchinson also was a backup in a season 26 episode as well.

Heckler can be a bit aggressive and arrogant with suspects, I agree with you on that. I remember when he asked the one shirtless suspect who ran from him, "Why did you run", to which he replied, "Because", and to which Heckler replied with, "Because isn't an answer." I also found it interesting how his demeanor totally changed when he pulled over the guy in the gas station and found a gun under the seat of his vehicle.

reply

I remember I couldn't stand watching the segment with the couple in the motel room with drugs on the bed, I wonder if they were really telling the truth about the drugs, I remember the male was very pissed off over the situation, I didn't watch a whole lot of episodes from Season 26 (what I've seen wasn't that great).

On the segment with the suspect having a gun under the seat of his vehicle I thought it sucked they had to arrest the suspect with a little bit of marijuana since it was only a misdemeanor right after they were gonna let him go, I do remember Heckler's demeanor totally changed once he saw the handgun, I'm glad he didn't get as angry or aggressive as Brian Cullen did in one Florida episode from Season 22, I remember the shirtless dude running from Heckler, I remember how he told the suspect that it's not the time to lie along with the suspect playing dumb, did they ever find the drugs the suspect threw? I thought where Heckler was at his worst was the one where they arrested a guy who stole money from someone so he could get some pills, I feel like Heckler has a strong disdain for drug users.

reply

Every time I see Deputy Cullen's segment, I wonder about myself if he was that aggressive and angry because everyone in the vehicle was black? The fact was, everyone was cool and even joking around with his partner, but he totally was a jerk the moment he saw the gun.

I'm thinking Heckler has a big disdain for drug users/addicts, he always mentions that he needs to clean up the neighborhood from drugs in a few of his segments as it's a big drug corridor where he patrols. That percoset segment he appeared in was very interesting.

reply

I sometimes wonder if Cullen acts aggressive whenever he sees a vehicle where everyone is black, I hated how the tone of the episode changes when Cullen starts screaming at the suspects, especially since it seemed to be a lighthearted traffic stop due to the suspects being cool and joking around with his partner, wasn't one of the suspects a convicted felon?

I do remember Heckler claims the neighborhood he patrols is a big drug corridor and wants to clean up the neighborhood, I remember the suspect in the precoset segment seemed very selfish and has no regards in how he gets his money, I do notice a lot of the mid to late 2000's episodes seemed to be filmed in Florida.

reply

Yes, the one passenger was indeed a convicted felon. Cullen says that because the neighborhood was rough and when he sees a gun, he really worries. The suspects were being cool and joking around with his partner, so I don't know why Cullen was all aggressive just over the sight of a gun under the front seat. I feel if they were all white, he wouldn't have been that aggressive.

reply

I sometimes wonder why the officers are harsher and more aggressive towards the blacks and the Hispanics than the whites, I remember Cullen's screaming totally freaked me out, I know sometimes the officers really worry whenever they're patrolling around the really rough areas, sometimes you don't know what what they used the gun in, I remember on one Season 21 episode from Las Vegas where Officer Rooks accidentally touches the gun while searching the handicapped van and starts freaking out, of course you know what happens in that episode.

Another officer I like is Bill Yada from Las Vegas (Season 10), he appeared in two episodes, one was where they deal with a man who shot his son in the leg and the other was when they arrested a young man for stealing bikes from the police impound lot, Bill Yada seems to be cool and chilled while dealing with the public

reply

Rooks's reaction was priceless when she touched that gun.

I don't know much about Bill Yada but the way he responded when the guy who stabbed his son denied the drugs he discarded in front of him and the other officer, repeating what he had just said was pretty funny.

reply

I thought it was funny seeing Yada get on the suspect's case for discarding the drugs, he was definitely calm the whole time in this episode despite having to deal with a high stress situation, he also appeared in another segment where a young man got arrested for stealing bikes at the police impound.

I agree Rooks reaction was priceless when she touched that gun, I didn't blame her for panicking a bit, I liked how the episode had a happy ending where the victim gets his car back and the suspect gets arrested and is likely facing a stiff prison sentence.
