Well, as little as I know about THE HOUSE OF WAX, it seems that WAXWORKS has more supernatural elements while H.O.W. is a straight-up slasher movie.

In WAXWORKS, the teens are invited to a wax museum and as they seperate, each enters one of the scenarios where they are eventually killed and become wax figures themselves. The exhibits in this museum are all based on horror legends (though some are a stretch), so you got the old classics like Dracula, zombies, the Mummy, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, etc., as well as real-life monsters such as Jack the Ripper and the Marquis de Sade. The man who runs the waxworks stole priceless artifacts that once belonged to each legend (for example, he owns the Phantom of the opera's mask), and in his deal with the devil, it is his job to find 18 victims - one for each exhibit - so that once they all have a victim, they will come to life and it'll be the end of the world.

HOUSE OF WAX has been called "The Texas Earwax Massacre", so there is some indication as to what the story is about. Stranded teens get knocked off one by one. These days, it seems that the original part of any slasher movie is what happens to the bodies afterwards. In this case, they are turned into wax figures. Apparently there is a whole town of these figures. I haven't yet seen the film, so I can't be any more descriptive. Besides, no one else is either, as they're too busy talking about Paris Hilton's involvement. But my first sentence is pretty much the answer to your question.

Cheers.

i can't really compare Waxwork and House of Wax in any way, other than they both involve wax figures. Waxworks is much more sci-fi in the sense that the teens actually are transported to another place and time, and are killed. The more people killed, the closer the wax figures are to ruling the world.

in house of wax, it's basically just a bunch of evil wax statues. and you get slashed, horribly. not to mention having your mouth glued shut....yucky.

I can... at 1st I thought they were BOTH House of Wax. I thought Waxwork was the older version... when I saw House of Wax I realized the plot was somewhat different, and that brought me here, trying to figure out the name of the 1st movie I saw, Waxwork, because I thought the name of it WAS House of Wax lol if you got that.

I think Waxwork was more interesting to watch although I didn't like the supernatural crap at the end that blew. However, the parts where they entered the exhibits, I thought that was very cool.

House of Wax on the other hand... I didn't think it was anything to leave home for. Typical horror movie. No real interesting plot, yeah ok he makes his victims wax figures while they are living... but he only did that a few times (that you saw in the movie) otherwise it was regular ol' horror movie crap, knives, guns, etc.

The end of H.O.W however Did leave for a possible sequal... or at least I think it did, even though I knew what they said from the beginning, not because I was told or anything... just because it was so obvious.

All in all, the more believable movie? H.O.W. The more interesting movie? Waxwork.

HOUSE OF WAX IS A REMAKE OF THE CLASSIC VINCENT PRICE MOVIE.

Thank you SALEMS-LOT. I was getting a little annoyed that no one mentioned the classic version. A fantastic film. Much much better than this new version piece of crap. With the exception of Paris Hilton dying. :)

A bit off topic...If you buy House of Wax on DVD (the Vincent Price version), Mystery of the Wax Museum is on there, too. It's interesting, because while the main details of the story remain the same, it's still very different.
