Why is it that throughout the film they talk about the reward being five million dollars, and then when the twins are sitting in Vincent's office near the end just before their mum introduces herself, they're talking about four million dollars? Am I missing something?
Also, just a small thing that appears to be lazy writing: When Julius first meets Vincent he says he's been waiting for this moment for his whole life - didn't he only recently find out about his brother's existence?
yes you kind of missed something... the money in the briefcase was 5 million... devito was the only "good" person who knew the real amount... everyone else was dead... so devito returned 4 million. no one knew he kept or stole 1 million. so on one hand he did the right thing but kept a nice tip.
and it was not lazy writing... people love throwing that phrase around on imdb... he was talking about having a family... there was a big point made that the reason he went down the wrong path in life was because of no family... Schwarzenegger left his idyllic life to find his real family... it was all about family... the entire thing... so when he says he was waiting his whole life, he was referring to having a real family... not specifically the brother he never knew he had
As the persons alluded to with "devito was the only "good" person who knew the real amount", I think you missed a bit about who "they" were. It was just Vincent, the delivery guy, and the two picking up the device.
The first time I saw it, as soon as Vincent kept repeating "four million", it was obvious to me he pocketed the other million. Actually, since Julius didn't know the real amount, if he Vincent hadn't kept the money, there really wasn't any point to having Vincent mention any amount. I think it would have been lazy writing to have him become completely reformed, that he still didn't have a bit of larceny left in him.
As that great philosopher Bugs Bunny said, "Something tells me I shoulda stood in bed."
Hmm. Never crossed my mind about the money part. I always figured it was a script error or Danny D just messed up his lines and no one noticed but, I've never seemed to be able to wrap my mind around an error like that going unnoticed.
I guess it makes sense though about him taking a cool mill out of the case before it was returned but I would think Julius would have made sure he didn't take anything out since he was wanting Vince to be all noble and such and do the right thing. I dunno. Guess I'm just too straightforward of a person to believe that he kept some to himself, that that was the answer all along because if it was, they would have wrote it in the story. Maybe that's just me.
