In 1988, People Could Smoke in Grocery Stores?
Really?

I remember smoking a lot at a Burger king, inside. Early 90's, 93 I think.
Not many fast food chains did that, usually the best places to go were like Denny's. I also remember cigarette vending machines in bathrooms.
I was born in 1985 and I grew up in New Mexico. I remember smoking was allowed in retail stores until around '94 or '95. I also remember cigarette vending machines in stores, train stations, bus stations and hotels used to have them too.
You could smoke in hospitals too. I remember going to the Dr. and the Dr. would light up right in his office while giving you a physical. Sop smoking in the grocery store was no big deal.

I am glad times have changed cause I'm not a smoker. Actually in my state it's against the law to smoke in any public place even bars. I hate second hand smoke from cigarettes. Plus they smell bad. They also make the person smoking them smell bad.

My parents didn't smoke, but they would let guests smoke in the kitchen of our house. Some stores let you smoke, some didn't. They had smoking sections in restuarants which would be like a cloud of smoke. All cars had multiple ashtrays, in the back and front.
Sports stadiums would have smoking areas. But you could smoke anywhere in a baseball stadium.

It's so funny...my husband and I only started dating around 8 years ago and I can remember going on dates with him and being asked "Smoking or non-smoking?". Feels like a lifetime ago but not really. I also remember buying cigarettes from vending machines in bars just before that time. Crazy!

No, in 1988 there was no smoking in grocery stores.
I got the impression they did not care. This was to show how somewhat 'trashy' & laid-back the ladies were.

"Didn't he discover America?"

I live in Ireland and grew up in the 80's and except for bars which was free reign every other building had designated smoking areas. I always imagined the States to be the same so was surprised by the scene here.
There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!
Kind of random.
There were actually quite a few movies back in the day that had random smoking scenes.
