Doc's Malt Shop

Was there a real "Doc's" in Ypsilanti? In an early scene, Tucker and the family go to the Malt/ice cream shop. It looked so cute, I wondered if it was based in reality.

According the "Filming Locations" listed here, the movie was all filmed in California. Which means, there might be a real Doc's but it wasn't used in the movie.

It was pretty much all filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area. Oakland, Vallejo, Petaluma and a few other places. The test of the Tucker when it flipped was filmed at Petaluma Speedway. I know, I was there :-) They originally wanted the track to be asphalt, but it was going to cost too much to do so we just packed the dirt as hard as we could. As to the Doc's, it might not be a real place. I say that because they changed our billboards on the backstretch. From Petaluma Speedway to Lansing Speedway. If a sign looked like it could have been from the 40's they left it and just made the phone number look more authentic.

I forgot there is this website that tells about movies filmed in Northern California. It lists the places where Tucker was filmed, and has photos of a lot of them.

George Lucas is known as a "San Francisco movie maker" so all of this makes sense. I like the movie.
