This movie works for today.
Republicans and the rich are the aliens. The cattle are the Trump supporters.

Indeed - it's more relevant now than ever. Though the aliens in the movie represent the elite as a whole (regardless of where they stand politically), the Republicans easily have the most common with the aliens than anyone else in power (you know they will say the same thing about anyone who belongs to another party), and I bet Carpenter would agree with that. And the suckers that eat everything up? Yup, no matters all the lies and hypocrisy that's coming from the glorified reality star (unsurprisingly has already broken many of his asinine promises, and is also establishing what's most likely going to be the richest and most corrupt administration in US history), it's seem very few of his supporters would dare disagree with what he's doing.... "anti-Government" my ass.
You want something corny? You got it!
democrats and republicans are both parties of evil scum.
However, contrary to what the OP says, democrats are no better than republicans.
For example, democrats were just in power for 8 years...did they give America free health care? No, just obamacare, which doesn't come anywhere close to being as good as is free health care. Yet democrats tout obamacare as if it is a great thing that shows how much they love everyone.
Both democrats and republicans are lackeys of the rich elites.
There's no such thing as "free healthcare". Someone has to pay for it, and in the case of socialized universal healthcare, it's the taxpayers themselves.

Technically you are right. But what I mean by "free healthcare" is that to receive medical services, taxpayers need not pay any more money out of their own pockets beyond that which they have already paid via taxes to the state.
With or without free healthcare, either way, taxpayers are getting shafted by having their money stolen by the state.
For example, to give taxpayers some of their stolen money back through a free healthcare system is much better than say, instead to use those tax dollars to fund pointless, unjustified & unwinnable wars in the Middle East and/or to make multi-million dollar donations to those same countries upon which america wages war.
that's the entire purpose of government, to steal and exploit the labor value of one group of people - the peasants - for the benefit of another group of people - the ruling class.
Either way, the taxpayers are going to have to pay for it, since the government has no money of its own. The government only has what it can steal.
there is no real difference
But with free healthcare, at least the government returns some of the money that it has stolen to the people from whom it stole said money, via medical services that they don't have to pay for again.
In contrast, with no free healthcare system, then none of that stolen money is returned to the people from whom it was stolen.
Both options are bad because they involve stealing money, but the first option is less bad because it steals less money.
But there is a real difference, because with the free healthcare system, then citizens keep more of their own money within their own pockets - where it belongs.
In addition, a free healthcare system allows them to access medical services that they might not otherwise be able to afford.
But ideally, the government should not steal any money from anybody, and then most people would be able to afford to pay for the healthcare they need.
Carpenter said this film is a metaphor about Reaganomics and greed in the 1980s. The aliens represent Republicans and yuppies. It's more relevant today than ever before. Vapid pop culture, mindless entertainment and consumer culture have been used to dumb down and brainwash American's into being near zombies. That was the point he was making and unfortunately the message didn't have much of an impact because things have only gotten worse since then. The world really does need a wake up call!
shareThat explanation makes no sense, since Republicans and yuppies are not hidden in society like the aliens in the movie are. No one needs special understanding or insight (represented by the sunglasses in the movie) to see them. So Carpenter was clearly not being truthful when he gave that response.
So we are left having to ask ourselves who Carpenter was really talking about. Which group of people, hidden in society and possessing immense wealth, influence, and media control was Carpenter really talking about? Who is it he was afraid to name directly?
Correct answer: Jews.
which group of people, hidden in society and possessing immense wealth, influence, and media control was Carpenter really talking about?
I think it is the rich elite capitalist ruling class. Not even just the top 1%...but more like the top tenth of the top 1%.
The aliens represent Republicans

You beat me to it! I was going to say the same thing. I just wish I had a pair of those glasses. It'd be much easier to know who to avoid without having to (attempt) to engage them in intelligent conversation first.

And don't waste time reading this line, it's just my pointless signature.
