This is the kind of nihilistic, dead, depressing, awful movie ...

that movie producers used to have the good sense not to make. I remember seeing this when it came out. Aside from being not a good story, and pointless, it is one of those movies, like say Irreversible, that exists merely to disgust. I would say there is no reason why a normal human being would want to or should see this. It's garbage, and so was the American remake. America at this time, and continuing today doesn't make movies for the most part, we just make remakes, cartoons, super-hero garbage, violent, more violent, and most violent visions of stupidity that fills the minds of our people and normalize moronity. yeah, I know moronity is not a word ... in the same way this is not a movie.

You’re an enemy of film.

What a bizarre sentiment. This movie is very disturbing indeed, as it explores the darkest regions of human nature. Of course you can despise this film for being emotionally offended by it. For instance I don't like Haneke movies for several reasons. But those are nevertheless very well produced and well acted. But calling it garbage is a bit far fetched. It certainly applies for the American remake. That was garbage and totally unnecessary.

Well, I think the American version is even worse than garbage, but the original, to me, in my opinion, is just what I said it was.

fair enough

It sounds more like the film got under your skin and disturbed you which is the vibe it was going for. The film is by no means exploitative. Some stories work best if they DON'T have happy endings. That's why the American version was so bad because it shoehorned in this happy ending which the original refuses to do. (And it was made a year after Altman's The Player had already mocked the typical unrealistic Hollywood happy ending). Michael Haneke's Funny Games (both the Austrian original and the shot for shot American remake) affects me in a similar way to the original Vanishing.but I would never call them garbage just because they disturbed me. That's what those films are trying to do.
