The current rating of 8.0+ is too high I think

I've noticed that generally on IMBD only the absolute brilliant movies have a rating of 8.0 or higher.

I thought Spoorloos was a clever(at times a chilling) movie but nothing more than that. I don't think it was a brilliant movie, I don't think it had exceptionally great acting, and I don't think it was masterful directing either. I think a 7.5 would've been a more suited rating.

You think but you don't know ! I know that everything below 8 is a insult for this movie. Great acting, very good story, great atmosphere... Yes some things can be better but that is a reason why is not 10/10, right ? :)

The fact that this film was willing to go as far as it did (which the American "remake" was obviously not willing to do) is enough to be worth at least an 8 rating.

I'd say this occupies a comfortable middle ground between "Seven" and "Memento," but all are excellent films. I'm glad a 20-year-old film rates this high, because prominent new releases too often undeservedly crack the IMDb 250 (or higher). "Avatar," anyone?

I am pleased that it is rated 8.0. It is one of my favorite films of all time. It combines the genres of thriller, mystery, and horror with deep philosophical undertones about fate vs. human control when it comes to one's own existence. Actually, the best film illustrating the concept of existentialism that I have seen in the past 20 years. The complexity of Raymond's character is, in itself, remarkable. He is a genius, a sociopath, a philosopher and one of the scariest people I have ever seen depicted in film just for those reasons. I love the concept of doing the opposite of what you instinctually, or in his case societally, know is the right thing. Only a pure sociopath could do the things he was able to do and do them without gratification or remorse. He is not a fantastical monster he is the guy who lives next door to you, the family man, the business man, the ordinary man. Frighteningly superb film.

Now if you are talking about the horrendous american remake with Keifer Sutherland than that's a whole different story.

this movie is better then clever, its deep. i put off watching it because the big reveal at the end was ruined for me by one of AFI's clip shows i think it was, but finally got around to watch it and still really liked it despite knowing the ending. i can only imagine how much more i would've been affected if the ending hadn't been ruined.

I agree with most people on this post. This is a brilliant movie. The directing and writing is clever and very suspenseful.

I enjoyed this movie far more than Shutter Island.

There are some who i don't think deserve an 8 and some that deserve higher, it is what it is, i have no problem with this good movie getting that high a score.

If a movie needs 50 minutes (half of a movie) to develop, how can one say it is a good movie? Half movie is good I agree, not the whole movie. Simple fact that it is a movie about sociopath who is regular guy next door, doesn't qualify it to be a good movie. If it does, then many of the Discovery movies about serial killers should be considered great movies and rated 8/10. In my opinion a good movie is a one that keeps you on the edge of the seat all the time from the beginning to the end like remake of The last house on the left or the Breakdown.

I gave it a 9. For me, it's a wonderful film that has stayed with me for 10 years and counting.

reply

Ya, I kind-of think that the people who rated it so high are a little bit sketchy themselves. They say every 1 out of 100 people is a sociopath (though many of them never commit crimes, they just lack empathy).

it is 7.8 now which i think fits quite well. I gave it 7- solidly good movie .but not quite timeless classic caliber

reply

I gave it 9 because it deserves it, it is classic in my opinion. Anyway ratings doesn't mean that much as there are people who like something and there are people who don't, its mostly subjective.

reply

For me that category is an 8: not a "great film", but definitely worthy of more recognition than a 7.

I thought it was a cool mystery story, well-told, and done mainly from the kidnapper's POV which was interesting to see. It had pretty cinematography, good pacing and a powerful ending that pays off everything in the story. Not really a groundbreaking movie but still very well done. I was invested from the very beginning and never lost interest at all; it was kind of like the movie equivalent of a page-turner.
