Future Claire

Was it a little much that Claire would've become a rich bitch who hated kids based on Frank's comment to her?

reply

That part never made any sense to me. She was caring and unselfish, hence the reason why her and Frank followed different paths in their lives. If that's the case, why would she suddenly change who she is and become more like Frank when she got older? Seems very unusual for someone who was running a temporary shelter for the poor and homeless. Good movie overall, but this part did not make any sense whatsoever.

Thank you, glad you agree.

I thought it was unrealistic too. She changed way too much.

Who says the Ghost of Christmas Future was showing "true" possible futures? When 4 ghosts set out to hold an intervention is there a rulebook that says they have to stick to reality?

reply

It wasn't that she hated kids, she hated them because they were poor and dirty and 'had no place' amongst the rich hoiti toiti bitches.

I'll admit I never really got that whole scene either, but my thing as a kid was I thought Claire, even though she and Frank were never married, she looked to me like at this time she KNEW about his death and was kind of sporting a widow look and I thought that THAT'S why she had that black veiled hat on and turned and said 'Thanks a lot, Lumpy' and turned back, trying to smile and laugh but you could tell she was choking up.

Well, the idea was to show that Claire changed too over the years and that now she is this uptight snooty person who doesn't care about poor people anymore. By the way, doesn't it look like her face is covered in white makeup?

The scene is based on the Frank's "Scrape them off...." comment. However, Frank would have never been in contact with Claire to speak this comment were it not for his visit from his dead boss and his Ghost of Christmas Past experience.

So basically, Claire's future state of mind is solely dependent upon Frank's present ghost experience. A flaw in an otherwise great movie.

reply

The futures shown were 'could be's if Frank didn't change his selfish ways. Considering how he's changed by the end of the movie, the true future is going to more than likely be bright and cheery for Frank and Claire and, when he finally does die, there will be a ton of people at his (probably open casket) funeral mourning him including his and Claire's children and grandchildren. Definitely more than just his brother and sister-in-law(with his brother, iirc, being the only one who cries over his death) as he's being unceremoniously cremated.

So, no, I wouldn't say it was a flaw.

.

I understand that they are "could be's", but the "could be" presented for Claire's future is contingent upon Frank's ghost experience. If frank was never visited by his dead boss, and if Claire's number was not auto dialed, Frank would have never encountered Claire to deliver the "Scrape 'em off" line. Future Claire blames Frank for something that would have never happened.

I guess calling it a "Flaw" is a bit harsh. However, in as much as I love the movie and watch it every year, I still get a bit annoyed by this.

That's just it though. Within the context of the movie he is visited by the four ghosts so any possible futures he's shown would be based upon what had happened up until then. Up until then, he had had the conversation with Claire at the shelter where he did tell her to "Scrape them off" and no amount of you positing a hypothetical situation otherwise is going to change that.
