Would his use of gun powder to close his wound really work? Just wandered how far fetched this is?

shareI think it is called "cauterization" and it was a practice that was widely used before the advent of antibiotics. The burning of a part of the body was thought to be effective in closing a wound, stopping blood loss and preventing infection.
But don't try it at home, unless your name is "John Rambo"!
Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!
Thank you, kind of thought that at least now I know they done there Home Work and didn't just make it up! Cheers
Cauterization doesn't close wounds, it singes the edges of blood vessels and veins shut to stop bleeding. It's still used for minor surgery (an electrical instrument with a heated metal tip). It doesn't help with infection, and can actually make the chances of infection worse as it kills more tissue, but for a short term bleeding solution, it works. In real life he'd have to seriously worry about shock after doing that to himself. Also, with all the blood the likelihood of the powder igniting is questionable.
But it looked great. Did he have a fake abdomen on for that?
