So he tore the U.S.A flag away from his coat ?

At the end of the movie we can see Rambo wearing his green coat from First Blood but this time there's no flag on it did he tore it away ?

Maybe its another coat?

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!

its a different coat. the coat in first blood was taken from him when he was arrested. he never got it back. he is wearing a blanket at the end of the film.

However, in Rambo II at the start we see him wearing what appears to be the same red shirt he had in First Blood, so it is possible and reasonable to assume it is the same one. After all, wear is he going to get a new field coat? The original First Blood II script has Rambo dump his medals and old army photos down the crapper, so perhaps this is an allusion to that mentality that Rambo had disassociated himself from the USA and its symbols while in exile.

or it makes more sense that its a different red shirt and coat.

unless the people on clean up at the end of first blood are like "oh, i found the madmans shirt and coat, id better save those for him. i'll have them sent to wherever that army guy took him to"

instead of "oh, its his shirt and coat. well *beep* him, he hurt people and screwed an entire town. they're going in the trash. he won't need them where he's going"

it really makes no sense for it to be the same coat

Clearly the red shirt was intended to reference First Blood no matter how unrealistic you think, just too coincidental. Field coat could go either way. These movies aren't exactly realistic anyway, makes no sense for you to be so uptight about the possibly.

woah there chuckles, we're just having a none important conversation. no need to be calling people uptight.

you're the one saying its the same coat even though theres no reason to believe it was retrieved from the police station in first blood or taken to the thailand command centre in the second movie (no luggage) or kept at the temple he settles at in the 3rd film. he isn't wearing it (nor carrying any bags) when we first see him in afghanistan. he gets his supplies for the mission from the local contact and immediately leave for the musha hadeen camp. he leaves for his mission and when he comes back he wears a similar coat but its not the same coat.

I said it is possible b/c the movies are not realistic.

Should we discuss then the coat he had at the end of Rambo? Field coat with his name patch on it. He's been out of the loop and out of service for years by that point. Do we care? I don't. As someone said, it's unimportant. I say it's inconsequential.

It doesn't really matter...but of course I have an opinion.
Here's how I see it. If you want to be continuity crazy, you can be, and here's how.

When he's arrested and escapes, all his possessions were boxed by the state police. They are then transferred to Trautman, who is listed as Rambo's next of kin. He then gives them to him, probably including his dog tags, clothes, field jacket...everything but his knife from the first film, when he's released from prison. They never show it, but he could have had a small duffel bag in the chopper when he shows up at the base in the second movie, and he's wearing the red shirt and his boots from the first movie with different jeans, because those were pretty messed up.

At the end of the second one, he walks off into the distance, but for all we know there was another building that way. Regardless, he didn't walk to Thailand. His stuff was still at the base and he takes what he has and heads to the monastery.
As far as the field jacket at the end of Part 3 goes, you can look at it two ways. Either it's his jacket with all the tags ripped off and he brought it with his other stuff but never wore it, left it tied to the horse, and his friend brought it with him to the battle.
Or it's just one of another million M65 field jackets. Plenty of the rebels are wearing them. And it gets cold in the desert at night.

Either way...Rambo returns to the monastery in between films, stays there for however long, and moves on with his duffel bag. Then we see the duffel bag and the jacket again at the end of Part 4. Yes, the flag from the first one is still missing, but that flag wasn't actually uniform, if I'm not mistaken. A drab field jacket wouldn't have any colored patches and the field jacket never got an American flag on the chest.

I think it's a pretty safe assumption that Rambo has turned his back on a country he feels has deserted him. That's why he was living in a Buddhist temple in the far east.
