Influienced by the cartoon?

I'm currently rewatching Rambo the Force of Freedom and Rambo has got jokey jokes. He's got a sense of humor in the cartoon and I'm now wondering if the idea to lighten him up a bit started here.

Good 80s cartoon by the way.

I actually heard the plot of this movie (trautman taken captive) was lifted directly from an episode in the cartoon show.

ps I remember watching the force of freedom as a kid. It was awesome to have Rambo in cartoon form as well as in movies. The guy was such a pop cultural emblem, they even managed to derive a kids show from that awesome concept. The chances of that happening now are zilch, but at least they appreciated that the heroic aspect of the character was something kids could relate to and enjoy, and the movies themselves were not that violent. It was good they had balls back then.

"Water", my ass! Bring this guy some Pepto Bismol!

Another thing I've noticed is that since the cartoon was of course a kid show there were a lot of kids on the show that Rambo bonded with. I wonder if that's where the idea for the kid in this movie came from.

Yeah, I think the kid in this movie was there because of how the Rambo movies had been popular with them at that time. It also worked because you do get a lot of kid soldiers in wars/regions like that. I personally reckon it was because the kid in this movie was roughly the same age as Stallone's kid at that time, and Sly was kind of making an action movie that kids (including his) could watch too (I always found this movie the least violent of the Rambos despite the big bodycount).

How many a$$holes we got on this ship, anyhow?!
