Almost a goth masterpiece, and one of the best movie witches ever
For me this movie has always been a little bit frustrating. The core concept and effects by Stan Winston are just absolutely amazing and grim, and it has some very cool cinematography and sound design in spots. What spoils it for me is the amount of runtime spent depicting quotidian bumpkin life, and in particular, hecking around on ATVs. (I've always had a similar feeling about Tremors - don't strike me!) I always wish the basic concept had been placed into a more timeless context, a la a modern Grimm's fairy tale or something, or the specifics of the story and characters to be sculpted in a more iconic way.
In any case, Haggis the witch is one of the creepiest and most feelsy depictions of a witch in a movie that I can think of:
