Is this supposed to be scary?

I'm just watching this for the first time on Chiller TV (I didn't think it was worth paying to see) and I can't believe people actually love this movie!
First of all, why is he called Pumpkinhead? Secondly, the acting is terrible(except for Lance as I am a big fan). The plot has a lot of holes! Was this made to be humorous? I don't know, someone will have to explain to me how this earned a cult following.

"Get away from her, you BITCH!!!"

Your brain has a lot of holes. Good grief.

I have little problem with the acting. Some of the city kids have awful moments, but Henriksen and the witch sell it. The story is very simple and I didn't notice holes myself, and you haven't brought any to my attention. It's also so incredibly annoying when people think a horror movie's worth is measured ONLY by how scary it is. In any film genre, people critique the story, the directing, the acting, the music, the special effects, etc. But when most people get to a horror film, they don't bother to evaluate any of that. They just ask themselves if it was scary or not. I don't understand it. Pumpkinhead has fantastic effects, a great story, and plethora of Halloween staples that make it essential viewing every October for me.

And Pumpkinhead is just what the locals call him because he's summoned with a relic from a pumpkin patch graveyard.

While it is a "horror" movie it really more about the monsters within us all. A cold heartless act (hurting the boy) drives his father to seek justice when that's the last thing the boy or his father would truly want. Lance played from how he thought he might feel in the same situation. Thing is its truly about the blinding pain and want of revenge not justice, the creature is our dark self in a single minded drive for vengeance against all the teens not just the guilty, of course in the movie Lance's character faces and over comes his lust for vengeance and he pays the price. I think the reason it has such a following is we all see ourselves in both the monster and Lance. And to be honest the only reason I can think of how its scary is the idea that as the seeker you must pay, as the hunted there's no escape, just like in real life you can't run or escape your monster you have to face it. I hope I helped some. Maybe try watching again with those things in mind, and try to remember when it was made, we saw things a bit different than.

Think you may be giving it too much credit. It was just a low-budget predictable horror flick that happened to have one good actor in it, and this was hardly his best role. Hurting the boy wasn't a "cold, heartless act." It was definitely an accident, no matter how obnoxious the kid on the bike was. Running away after may have been heartless, but Henrickson's character acted as if his son was deliberately murdered, which wasn't the case. That alone was a major flaw.

Actually the poster you responded to was pretty much spot on. Yes, the death of Ed Harley's son was indeed an accident, but Ed was overcome by one of the darker desires of human nature (vengeance) which is very often blind to concepts such as right and wrong. Pumpkinhead is the embodiment of Ed Harley's thirst for revenge.

That's not a flaw at all, that's kinda the point of the movie. Ed wasn't seeking justice, he wanted revenge, there's a huge difference between the two. This film conveys a very simple point, revenge is wrong and man's desire for it can lead to terrible things.

I think you said it perfectly, Jack-O-Latern_2623. I first saw the movie when I was a teenager, and I sensed the fault in Ed Harley, and it made me very sad. He was a wonderful father and a gentle person, but his need for revenge ruined him.

I watch this movie just about every Halloween, if just for the nostalgia.

The gene pool could use a little chlorine......

Thank you the_zookeeper. I feel bad for Ed every time I watch this film. He was a very good man, but like you've said "his need for revenge ruined him". Ed is a very tragic character who lost more in one day than any man should lose in a lifetime(his beloved son, his faith, his life and finally his soul), simply heartbreaking.

Me too, it just isn't Halloween without a viewing of Pumpkinhead.

Not really big on horror films. Especially don't like the ultra violence generally associated with them (gory don't equal scary either, or good film making).

I've always liked this film. Basic premise is solid, and well-acted. When Henriksen is on point, he can be very good, and he's very good in this.

Credit to the film for keeping the violence level on low. It's actually rather restrained.

No, I never found this to be scary at all. But it was very atmospheric, and that can be extremely effective. It was here.

There are tons of movies like this, where they come up with a meh plot in order to get a bunch of people into a situation where a monster/psycho runs around killing them. It's not supposed to be perfect, just entertaining. I enjoyed it even though I was very aware that there were things wrong with it.

Then i suggest you try watching this movie at night when the moon is full. When the movie is over go outside and walk through the woods alone.

What holes does the plot have? It's a pet peeve of mine when people come to a board calling a film horrible and don't bother explaining exactly what way said movie is horrible. While it didn't scare me (no film truly has for many years but I enjoy watching horror more than any other genre so I still do), I still find it great. It is a story of a man who loses the one thing he truly cares about in life (his son) and how he tries to get revenge. That attempt for revenge ends up destroying him just as much as the people responsible for his son's death. I think the story is great and this movie has a wonderful atmosphere.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!
