You know, these old 'hillbilly' tales may not be just old folklore

I grew up in rural North Carolina and lived there until I finished community college and working several part time jobs in order to rent an apartment and attend and graduate from UNCG. I lived in North Carolina three years after graduating. I live in the UK now but really miss rural NC and the old south.

I can tell you that there are communities such as what you saw in Pumpkinhead that exist in NC where they believe TV is of the devil and very religious and supersitious. There are plenty of such communities in Western North Carolina, such as in Rutherford County onwards. Even here in the UK and Ireland, such communities exist. I remember kids in the "holler" talking about people that you just stay away from. There was once a young guy who sold drugs and robbed an old woman. This man was never seen again but there sure was a lot of blood smeared on his walls. His door was smashed through as well. All the windows were smashed as well.

During my few years living near Rutherford County, I worked at a video store called Movie Gallery. Every night I worked, I'd close up and a sense of dread would come over me because I would have to drive down the isolated roads of Rutherford County to get to my little town of Lattimore, which is right on the edge of the county. I kept me doors locked because I was more afraid of the supernatural than what could shoot me for my money. And, anyone who drives at night on those lonely roads will tell you that there is something out there similar to what was portrayed in this film.

This film still reminds me of rural NC. These people we call "dumb hillbillys" know a little more than what we do. Also, even the most educated person living in those parts will tell you that there are some areas in Western North Carolina you just do go in after dark.

I live in North Carolina, closer to the Piedmont (center of state) but I grew up and lived (18 years) in the western part of the state. I can testify to the op's message that rural NC is scary and there are strange things going on. Visit Mcdowell county, Old Fort (NC) after dark and you'll see.

Oh we certainly did in Shelby, NC. I remember the rent nine, get the tenth video free. It lasted up until the end of 1999. Good times.

I know the chances of you replying to this after two years are slim to none, but can you elaborate a bit more? I live in the Piedmont region of NC, so this kind of interests me. Haven't really been to the Western part a lot.

Yes, Rutherford County marks the beginning of the mountain region and I used to live in Lattimore, NC. I know that people in the mountain regions (many are) are very religious and superstitious. There are lots of supposedly haunted places that even to this day, people stay away from.

I currently live in Burke County, NC (just north of Rutherford), and lived in Jackson County for two and a half years before that. The scariest thing about either, particularly at night, is the prospect of running into one of the many whacked-out rednecks or meth-heads. I've spent my fair share of time in the mountains of WNC after nightfall, and the only thing that worries me is the idea of running into a bear cub. When it comes to scary stories I've heard from others, the only ones that mean anything to me are those about National Forest hermits threatening biologists who crossed their imaginary property line.

At the same time, I love the old Appalachian folk legends and ghost stories. I just know better than to believe 'em!

It's amazing how some horror movies and tv shows have some truth to it. Some may be based on true stories or true events, while some have something rooted in truth. Freddy was based on newspaper articles based on refugees who came to America. They had bad dreams someone was going to kill them and they died in their sleep. While Wes got part of Freddy from it, you have other cases like Chucky. While I have not heard anyone from the making of Child's Play say it, you do have Robert The Doll. Robert The Doll was a doll given to a boy by a housemate. It's said the doll was cursed and would run around the house when no one is there and throw things.

If you look at ancient folklore and legends, you will find some monsters, ghost, aliens/ufos, and happenings.

I live in Myrtle Beach. We have UFO tours. Sadly what we are known for is missing people. It's a large transient state. The Britanee Drexel other case are still talked about.
